During restoration efforts, a century-old letter found reveals fascinating local history for Allen AME Church in ! The Allen AME Church was listed on PNJ's 2021 Endangered Historic Sites list after suffering a major fire in 2018. Built in 1888, it is an important African American landmark in the Cape May Historic District. The building was the home of a congregation who left the Cape Island Methodist Church and moved into a former church on Franklin Street in 1845 before building the current building. Now a city-owned building, the site is being transformed into the Clemans Theater, which will become the first permanent home in the 45-year history of the East Lynne Theater Company, an equity professional theater based in Cape May.
