THE PROBLEM: THE LOCAL POST OFFICE IS NOT AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT COMPLIANT
• No ramp is present to assist citizens with special needs to access the Cape May City Post Office.
• Citizens with disabilities have to call ahead to ask for assistance. The Post Office employees accommodate the citizens by meeting them at the back loading dock.
• Special needs citizens who take it upon themselves
to access this Post Office do so at a risk. This is also a liability risk for the Cape May City Post Office.
• Currently there is a very large retirement facility one block away. Many of these registered voters do not drive and rely on this post office to perform their errands. CALL TO ACTION: THE CITIZENS OF CAPE MAY NEED YOUR HELP!
• I am asking for your support in this effort.
• Please contact government officials that can help achieve this goal.
• Please help promote our cause. We need to draw more attention to this problem to gain more support.
• Please give me some advice to assist me in this goal. IMPORTANCE: WHY IS IT ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY TO HAVE AN A.D.A COMPLIANT RAMP?
• I have seen elderly people walking backwards up the marble steps with their walkers.
• The Post Office and its customers are at risk. Solving the problem now will solve any issues that may arise in the future.
• I believe it is a fundamental right to be independent and self-sufficient and not be greeted at the loading dock for assistance like a second class citizen.
• The post office has other services that are necessary to the public besides mail.
• The USPS is an independent agency of the executive branch of the United States Government. Therefore the Post Office in Cape May is a federal facility and it should be required to be A.D.A. compliant.
• This Post Office is a quarter century behind the first A.D.A. laws of 1990.
• Every citizen is a tax payer and every citizen is a customer of The United States Postal Service.
