Tonight at 6:00 PM: Dr. Kevin Faccenda dives into the ecological challenge of invasive grasses. By tracking nearly 600 grass species, his research reveals how deliberate agricultural plantings changed the islands forever.

Talk is followed by an ethnobotanical potluck so please bring a dish to share!

🌸 What’s Blooming at the Garden: The Beautiful Hō`awa!

Right now, if you take a stroll through the Garden, you might catch the subtle, fragrant beauty of the hō`awa (Pittosporum spp.) in bloom.

Endemic to Hawaiʻi, this incredible kūpuna plant is characterized by its thick, leathery leaves and lovely clusters of creamy white flowers. But the magic doesn't stop at the bloom! Once pollinated, the hoʻawa produces distinct, woody seed capsules. When mature, these hard capsules split open to reveal bright, sticky orange-red seeds—a traditionally favorite snack for native birds, including the ʻalalā (Hawaiian crow).

Ethnobotany Fact: Beyond its ecological importance, the dense, sturdy wood of the hoʻawa was highly valued by early Hawaiians and was sometimes used to craft the moʻo (gunwales) of canoes.

Come take a walk this week and see if you can spot the hoʻawa in bloom! 🌿

🌱 Adopt an ʻŪlei Plant this Sunday! It is time for our monthly Grow Aloha plant adoption! This Sunday, March 22, we are partnering with Grow Aloha to give away free ʻūlei (𝘖𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘺𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘥𝘪𝘧𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘢) plants to our community.

Why we love ʻūlei: This beautiful, sprawling indigenous shrub isn't just great for your landscaping; it has a rich history! Because its wood is incredibly strong and flexible, it was traditionally used to make ʻōʻō (digging sticks), fish net hoops, and the ʻūkēkē (a traditional musical bow).

By planting ʻūlei in your yard, you are preserving a vital piece of Hawaiʻi's cultural and ecological heritage.

Event Details:
🗓 Date: This Sunday, March 22
⏰ Time: 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM
📍 Where: Amy Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden

Please note: Plants are limited in availability and will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. Arrive early!

When we grow Hawaiian native plants and heritage crops, we grow aloha for ʻāina. 💚
