Carbondale Area recently conducted a dress down day with all proceeds going to the "Rev for Greg" Foundation, in honor of the late Greg Perri, a former student of Carbondale Area. The money raised by the foundation will go to local charities and a scholarship for our students.

The Carbondale Area Class of 2026 celebrated its commencement with a day filled with tradition, pride, and community spirit. Before the graduation ceremony began, members of the graduating class participated in a celebratory parade through the streets of Carbondale, allowing residents, family members, and friends to recognize and congratulate the seniors on their accomplishments.

The commencement ceremony opened with the Academic Processional as the Carbondale Area Concert Band performed Pomp and Circumstance. Evan Rodney and Stone Rodney presented the colors on behalf of Eagle Scouts. Assistant Principal Lawrence A. Gabriel III welcomed those in attendance and led the Pledge of Allegiance. The Carbondale Area Chamber Singers performed both the National Anthem and the Alma Mater.

Academic honors were highlighted as Salutatorian William Murphy and Valedictorian Matthew Serkosky addressed their classmates, families, and guests. Murphy encouraged his fellow graduates to use their talents and opportunities to make a positive impact on the world around them, reminding the Class of 2026 that even small actions can create meaningful change. Serkosky spoke about the importance of believing in oneself, having confidence in one's abilities, and being willing to take chances. He encouraged his classmates to step outside their comfort zones, embrace new opportunities, and trust themselves as they pursue their goals and dreams.

Principal Joseph W. Farrell introduced commencement speaker Chrissy Richards, a member of the Carbondale Area Class of 1998. Richards shared personal experiences and words of encouragement, urging graduates to pursue their goals with confidence while remaining connected to their roots and community.

A cherished graduation tradition continued as Olivia Lawler, President of the Class of 2026, formally conferred the senior mantle to Kymara Mcgann, President of the Class of 2027. Mcgann then delivered the Junior Response, accepting the responsibility of carrying on the traditions and leadership of the school.

The ceremony also included the presentation of the Ruth Giles Schroeder Scholarship. Murphy was announced as the recipient of the prestigious scholarship, valued at $25,000 this year. The scholarship was presented by Mrs. Megan Ruggiero, Director of Guidance, and Principal Joseph W. Farrell. Thank you to the trustees for providing this generous scholarship year after year.

Principal Joseph W. Farrell formally presented the Class of 2026, and Superintendent Holly W. Sayre accepted the class on behalf of the Carbondale Area School District. Prior to accepting the graduates, Sayre reflected on Carbondale's rich history and proud traditions, highlighting the resilience and determination that have defined the community since its coal mining roots. She encouraged the graduates to embrace their opportunity to leave their own mark on history, reminding them that it is now their turn to shape the future while carrying forward the legacy of those who came before them. The awarding of diplomas was conducted by Mr. David Osborne, President of the Carbondale Area Board of Education, assisted by Mrs. Ruggiero.

Following the conferring of diplomas, graduates celebrated with family and friends as the ceremony concluded with the Academic Recessional to Landslide by Fleetwood Mac.

The commencement ceremony marked the culmination of years of hard work, dedication, and perseverance for the members of the Carbondale Area Class of 2026. As they embark on new journeys in college, the workforce, military service, and other pursuits, they leave behind a legacy of achievement and school pride that will be remembered throughout the Carbondale community. The parade through Carbondale and the commencement ceremony served as fitting celebrations of a class prepared to make its mark on the future.

Co-Op Spotlight: Xander Keill

"My name is Xander Keill, and during this school year I completed my co-op placement as a construction worker with a local contractor. The organization provides demo and repairs, flooring, framing, and much more. During my placement, I handled tasks such as helping with demos and filling the dumpster, framing, and putting up dry wall, and helping with tile on hard jobs. Through this experience, I improved important skills including communication, teamwork, and time management. I also learned the importance of responsibility and keeping a professional attitude in the workplace. This co-op experience helped me better understand the career field I am interested in and prepared me for my future goals by giving me real-world work experience. I am very thankful to my supervisor Doug Keill for being supportive, patient, and providing me with this valuable opportunity."

Co-Op Spotlight: Nathan Ulmer

"My name is Nathan Ulmer, and my co-op was working with Miss Tami Gallo teaching Physical Education at Carbondale Area Elementary School. Working with Ms. Gallo in the elementary school gym class has truly made a significant impact on my life. I learned so much more than just how to play dodgeball or run relays. Ms. Gallo showed me the importance of patience and understanding when dealing with younger children. I had to learn to explain things clearly and kindly, often repeating instructions multiple times, which really built my communication skills.

"Beyond that, I discovered a passion for helping others stay active and healthy. Seeing the joy on the kids' faces as they participated in games and activities was incredibly rewarding. It taught me the value of leadership and responsibility, as I often took the initiative to help organize activities or guide younger students. This experience not only boosted my confidence but also showed me the positive influence I could have on others, shaping my perspective on community and teamwork in ways I hadn't anticipated."

Co-Op Spotlight: Bryden Yetter

"My name is Bryden Yetter. My co-op placement was at Signature Building Systems. SBS is a company that builds modular homes at their plant in Moosic, PA. They have an assembly line in their plant where all the departments work together to create a box. These boxes are then wrapped to put on a trailer to go to their final destination. That is where they are put together to become a house. My two favorite departments were the electrical department, where I learned how to drill the holes and run the electrical wire. Next was the plumbing department. Some of my responsibilities were to fill the pvc pipes with water and to check for any leaks. We then made sure they drained correctly. I also connected the vent pipes that were running through the ceiling. I have developed the skills to be able to wire a house from start to finish, problem solving electrical fixtures that do not have power, and plumbing.

"Something important I have learned is that it's hard work and not everyone is made for it or will have the same work ethic as you do. This experience has helped me prepare for my future by giving me a chance to learn how to do electrical and plumbing. One positive thing about my workplace is that everyone is very friendly and works well together."

Co-Op Spotlight: Jozlyn Santos

"My name is Jozlyn Santos, and I completed a co-op in Inpatient Nursing at Geisinger CMC. Gesinger CMC is a hospital and healthcare organization that provides medical services such as emergency care, surgery, maternity care, cancer treatment, heart and vascular care, and other specialized healthcare services to patients in Northeastern Pennsylvania. As a clinical co-op student, my responsibilities included assisting patients with daily care needs such as changing, feeding, and walking. I transported discharged patients by wheelchair, cleaned and prepared rooms, took patients’ vital signs, and restocked medical supplies in patient rooms to help support hospital staff and maintain patient care. During my co-op, I improved my communication, teamwork, and patient care skills. I also became more confident working in a fast-paced healthcare environment.

"One important thing I learned from this experience is how important compassion and patent care are when caring for patients and supporting healthcare staff. This experience helped prepare me for my future career goals by giving me hands on experience in the medical field and strengthening my interest in pursuing a healthcare career, especially in surgery.

"I am very thankful for the opportunity to complete my co-op at Geisinger Community Medical Center and appreciate the support and guidance provided by my supervisors and staff throughout my time there."

Our final Senior Spotlight for the Carbondale Area Class of 2026 is Valedictorian Matthew Serkosky.

Matthew is the son of Sarah Serkosky, a member of the Carbondale Area Class of 1998, and Ronald Serkosky. He is the brother of Evan Serkosky, a sophomore, and Claire Serkosky, a freshman, at Carbondale Area.

Throughout his time at Carbondale Area, Matthew has been highly involved in academics, athletics, leadership, and service. He has been a four-year member of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), serving as President during his senior year. His accomplishments in FBLA include placing 5th at Regionals and 6th at States in Intro to Information Technology as a freshman, 1st at Regionals and 11th at States in Parliamentary Procedure as a sophomore, and earning multiple awards in Business Law. As a junior, Matthew placed 1st at Regionals and 5th at States in Business Law, qualifying for and competing at the national level. During his senior year, he once again earned 1st place at Regionals and placed 8th at States in Business Law.

Matthew has also been a dedicated member of student government throughout high school, serving as Class Vice President during his junior and senior years and Student Council Vice President as a senior. He was a four-year member of the Boys Varsity Soccer team and served as team captain during his senior season. In addition, he participated in Unified Bocce, SADD, Spanish Club, Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science, Aevidum Club, Math Club, Physics Club, and the Science and Technology Club. During his senior year, Matthew served as President of SADD, Spanish Club, and National Honor Society.

Academically, Matthew has excelled throughout his high school career. He has been a member of National Honor Society and National Junior Honor Society from seventh through twelfth grade and served as NHS President during his senior year. He was also a six-year member of Academic Honors. Among his many achievements, he was named the 2026 NEIU 19 Scholar of the Year for Carbondale Area, a Times-Tribune Scholastic Superstar, and Carbondale Area's Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year. In 2025, he earned first place in the Pennsylvania Late Fall Budgeting Challenge, competing against more than 1,150 participants statewide, and also placed third at the post level in the VFW Voice of Democracy audio essay competition.

Outside of school, Matthew gained valuable professional experience as an intern at McGovern Insurance Agency from February through August 2025 and worked seasonally at Kohl's. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with friends, playing soccer, and video games.

After graduation, Matthew plans to attend the University of Michigan to earn a bachelor's degree in Business Administration and pursue a career in finance.
