Re-posting this for all who didn’t get a chance to see it. Please feel free to share it! Thanks much!

As you may know, thanks to the incredible generosity of our donors, the renovation work of Davies Hall 123/124 for the new Strong Survivors Cancer Rehabilitation Lab (CRL) was recently completed (https://strong-survivors.siu.edu)

On the SIU Day of Giving 2020 (Wednesday, March 4th), we we will be hosting a Grand Opening of the new CRL space from 5-6:30 PM. There will be snacks and refreshments available and the public is welcome.

In addition to the Grand Opening ceremonies, we will be continuing our efforts to raise $25,000 to secure the naming rights for the new facility to name it after my cousin, Julie Honerkamp, the inspiration for the program (https://strong-survivors.siu.edu/about/julie.php) It would be a wonderful way to honor the legacy of her bravery, toughness, and enduring spirit. As was the case last year, all funds raised toward the naming effort will go toward the administration of the Strong Survivors program (maintenance of the facility/equipment, support of the participants, support of the student staff members whose efforts benefit participant quality of life, etc.).

For those who wish to make a tax-deductible donation, there will be donation forms available at the event (just bring check or cash).

If you are unable to join us at the event but still wish to donate, please either:

a. contact Steph Taylor at the SIU Foundation office:

[email protected]
Office: 618-453-4975
Cell: 618-319-0408

OR

b. donate on the Day of Giving at:

https://siuday.siu.edu/strong-survivors

Please add “Julie Honerkamp Naming Effort” where allowed when you make your donation.

Thank you in advance for your generous support of the program!

BEWARE: word on the street is that this goon has been dragging people down to Quatros Pizza for Strong Survivors Fund Day/Night.

WHAT CAN YOU DO? We are going to advise that sometime between now and Midnight today (Tues 12/3) you get to Quatros to dine-in, buy a gift certificate for someone, pick up a carry out order OR order a delivery. Just be sure that one of our fliers is turned in when you pay (they have them at the Quatros pay counter or you can print the pic) so that 30% of your purchase goes to support the Strong Survivors Fund (https://strong-survivors.siu.edu) and helps us to continue to provide all our services for anyone who has experienced cancer and their caregivers. That is the only way to avoid seeing that face!

SPREAD. THE. WORD.

A few days back, a time-honored tradition for the SIUC/SIH Strong Survivors Class (https://strong-survivors.siu.edu/) at John A. Logan College's Logan Fitness continued on "Train the Trainer Night" where the program participants got to turn the tables on the staff members and became their personal trainer for the night.

11/22/2019

A great, long-standing Strong Survivors tradition continued tonight: the end of semester Celebration Party. Awesome food, great fellowship, the presentation of well-earned awards, and this moment captured on video: new participants completing their initial 12-week program pass through a tunnel of continuing participants and staff members as they graduate to the graduate-level of the program, Survivors Forever. Great stuff.

This video is a couple years old and features recently retired Saluki Swimming and Diving Coach Rick Walker, a few former Saluki athletes, and former Saluki Volleyball coach Justin Ingram, but it’ll give you a great feel for the great fun that is the “Saluki Strip”. Good times at Davies Gym for Saluki Volleyball’s Strong Survivors Night! We didn’t get the W against Northern Iowa, but the evening was a big win for The Fun. It included an Only-The-2nd-Time-Ever win in the Hit A Pizza Box With A Serve Contest by Strong Survivor Michelle Parker-Clark and the debut of the 2019 Emma Baalman Fathead.

Back in May of 2010, a special group was started within the Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Department of Kinesiology: The KIN 320 Century Club. To gain entry into this select club, a student must earn a grade of 100 or more on each of the 4 exams in Kinesiology 320: Exercise Physiology. It’s always been a figurative badge of honor to earn this designation, but now there are t-shirts. This past spring semester the group inducted another member, Kara Rich – congrats Kara! She is pictured with Century Club members Brandon Sjodin (Spring 2018), Patrick McCowen (Spring 2017), and Cole Shartzer (Fall 2018). The other members who round the current group of 10 sent in pics of them rocking their shirt: Mallory Korbar (Fall 2016), Emily Townley (Holzhauer) (Fall 2014), Jared Brown (Summer 2017), Krystal Stein Emrick (Spring 2010), Andy Perez (Summer 2015) & Emily Toennies Schirmer (Summer 2010).

Who will be the next inductee? Stay tuned...

As you likely know, the 1st Annual SIUC T-Rex Race occurred this past Saturday at Saluki Stadium. The results were controversial as the “winner” ran without proper headgear and a properly inflated suit (see video evidence in the comments below). A formal protest has been lodged and is currently under review, along with a request for a rematch. In the meantime, we felt that the true winner, Dept of Kinesiology Sport Administration major and Saluki Track and Field thrower, Emily Kern, deserved recognition for her victory. Thus she has been presented with a champions crown. We eagerly await the results of the SIUC T-Rex Race Commission’s investig*tion.

Saluki v UT-Martin this Saturday (Sept 14) at 6. Even if you don’t like football, you want to be there at halftime as competitors from the various SIUC Colleges will compete for bragging rights in the T-Rex Race.

Competing for the College of Education & Human Services will be Dept of Kinesiology Sport Administration major and Saluki Thrower, Emily Kern, Dept of Kinesiology Academic Advisor Christopher Topher Hinkle, and someone who’ll likely make the tallest, gangliest T-Rex ever. Come on out and cheer us on! If you’ve never seen one of these before, click the link below for a glimpse of what is to come. The T-Rexes will need to be fast, but they’ll also have to pick up a football at midfield with their T-Rex arms as they go endzone to endzone.

It is with a heavy heart that I say I am leaving my post of almost two years in Davies 107 to start a new adventure in the Math Department - Neckers Hall. I have so enjoyed my time with the Department of Kinesiology. I have made many good friends, enjoyed many good times...even though I had to put up with the shenanigans of Dr. Phil on pretty much a daily basis 😜 I will miss coming to work here every day...seeing all the wonderful students and passing out calculators for the tests in Dr. Becque's class 😉 I will especially miss the occasional visits by the Dept. Mascots, aka Beagles extraordinaire, Beesley, Booker and the newest addition, Bonnie (Bonster). I'll be here for a half day tomorrow 2/7 and then it's peace out!!
