On the last day of , we are putting our focus on DEMYSTIFYING THE BIG HOUSE by Katherine A. Foss! Essays in this volume illustrate how shows such as Orange Is the New Black and Oz impact the public’s perception of crime rates, the criminal justice system, and imprisonment. Contributors look at prison wives on reality television series, portrayals of death row, breastfeeding while in prison, transgender prisoners, and black masculinity. They also examine the ways in which media messages ignore an individual’s struggle against an all too frequently biased system and instead dehumanize the incarcerated as violent and overwhelmingly masculine. Together these essays argue media reform is necessary for penal reform, proposing that more accurate media representations of prison life could improve public support for programs dealing with poverty, abuse, and drug addiction—factors that increase the likelihood of criminal activity and incarceration.

DEADLINE EXTENSION! 🕘🐰

The Devil's Backbone Fiction Series Contest has extended the deadline from May 31st, 2026 at midnight, to June 30th, 2026 at midnight!

Devil’s Backbone Fiction, named for the eerie, jagged ridge in the Shawnee National Forest, publishes edgy, unsettling fiction that vividly captures Illinois and its neighboring states. We are particularly interested in manuscripts depicting peoples and settings that have been previously overlooked, as well as manuscripts focusing on the sordid histories and unique setting of Southern Illinois—rural grit, university chaos, small-town tensions, race dynamics, and more. All genres are welcome, including but not limited to science fiction, crime, romance, and historical fiction. We prioritize fresh, diverse voices and works that entertain and reveal our shared regional identity.

Special attention will be given to any manuscript set in Southern Illinois.

The contest winner receives a publication contract with SIU Press and thirty copies of their book upon publication.

Dante Alighieri's exact birthdate in 1265 is unknown, but is sometimes given as May 27. The library holds two editions of his Inferno with notable engravings, one by the poet and artist William Blake and one by French illustrator Gustave Doré. Compare their depictions of Dante's second circle of hell, reserved for the lustful, where masses of souls are eternally tormented by swirling winds.

As winds to a close, we are featuring another fascinating title from our Perspectives in Crime and Justice Series, this time focused on juvenile defenders. https://www.siupress.com/9780809336647/dilemma-of-duties/

In DILEMMA OF DUTIES, Anne M. Corbin outlines patterns of role conflict that defenders experience, details its impact on counselors and clients in the juvenile justice system, and addresses the powerful influence of the juvenile court culture and the lack of resources for defenders. Tasked with guiding these children, counselors frequently must contend with and manage their clients’ general distrust of adults as they attempt to serve as their voices to the court.

We here at SIU Press are honoring those who served and who are no longer with us. 🇺🇸❤️🤍💙 Today, we spotlight military history through two recent paperback books and our new entry in the Campaigns in the West series, which you can PRE-ORDER now for its June release.

In early 1862, the Civil War had been raging for almost ten months, and the Confederacy had enjoyed virtually uninterrupted success. From seizing federal property to early battlefield victories, Southern forces had effectively expelled Union authority from nearly all of the Confederacy’s eleven states. The Union suffered repeated setbacks, while modest victories in western Virginia and Kentucky had little strategic impact. By the end of February, however, much had changed. The Vicksburg Campaign, argues Timothy B. Smith, is the showcase of Ulysses S. Grant’s military genius. From October 1862 to July 1863, Grant tried repeatedly to capture the Confederate river city. His final, daring move allowed him to land an army in Mississippi and fight his way to the gates of Vicksburg. He captured the city and Confederate garrison on July 4, 1863, opening the Mississippi River for the Union. Hasegawa presents the first volume to explore the wartime provisions made for amputees in need of artificial limbs—programs that were the forebears of modern governmental efforts to assist in the rehabilitation of wounded service members.
