We get a lot of calls and messages asking how to apply for a home. Just a reminder - we do NOT give away free homes!! We also do NOT have a stock of houses available for folks in emergency situations like a fire or storm damage. That's not how it works.

We are a very small Habitat affiliate made up of a 100% volunteer crew. We build only one home per year and do several Minor Repair projects per year.

We advise people to LIKE this page. When we reopen the application process we will post it on this page. The homeowner for the home currently under construction has already been selected.

If you'd like to come out and help out, check out the Volunteer page or the Board page on this website. Committee chairs are listed on the page and you can contact Board Memebrs through our email address. We're always looking for folks to join our dedicated group! In the beginning much of the construction work is done by contractors and licensed technicians so we don't always have work for volunteers. But we will definitely let you know when we do! Workdates are posted on this page once we get rolling.

Last week we got the call from Samron. Our reliable site director, Dan, met them out there last Wednesday and they got started digging and pouring our footings. They came back on Thursday and finished up by digging out the crawl space.

We’re so grateful to Samron and Beelman for their donation of time and materials to complete this phase of our latest project. Our small Habitat affiliate is a 100% volunteer group and we could not do our work without this vital support from local businesses!

Next step is to get block layers in to build our foundation. I’ll keep you posted as to when we will be calling in volunteers!

This week is National Volunteer Week! And I wanted to be sure to get one more post out to let all of our volunteers know how much we appreciate them. Many small Habitat affiliates like ours have “closed up shop” because of lack of support, funding and people coming out to work.

Our small affiliate is made up 100% of volunteers. Our bookkeepers, our fundraisers, all the behind-scenes workers and our construction crew are all folks who contribute their time and effort to help build our community. We greatly appreciate those efforts. Even if volunteers are only able to come out for a couple hours or even just once in a while, you are helping to keep our little group alive and flourishing.

If you are unable to come out on our workdays, we appreciate that you like to follow along with our progress and we feel your energy supporting us. We are always looking for folks who wish to join our board or serve on a committee on the administrative end of things. If you are interested in serving in that way, please send an email to [email protected] and we will make sure it gets to the right person to contact you.

Along with volunteers, we so appreciate all the other folks who come out to support us. On Monday Ameren came out to our new build site and took down a big tree. Then on Wednesday and Thursday our crew showed up to cut up the debris and clear it from the site. We’re thankful for the support we always get from the City of Murphysboro… in so many ways… this time to give us a place to get rid of our tree debris. Then there’s the never-ending support from John A Logan… the Construction Technology class was out on Thursday to mark out our new house. And those young students also helped us load the debris and were SUPER helpful lifting some of the heavier pieces.

Here’s some photos from the week. We also finished things up at Chrisden’s. Dan brought his tiller over and we got the high spots tilled and seeded just in time for today’s rain. The last one is another good BEFORE and AFTER photo - the start of a build and the end.

Our first workday will be Thursday, April 23rd. We will start at 8 AM at 1834 Pine Street in Murphysboro, right next door to where we were last year.

We will be cleaning up the debris from the tree that was taken down. John A Logan classes will be there to stake out the house at 1834. We will also be tilling and planting grass in Chrisden’s yard at 1840 and we’ll move the "Future Location of Another Habitat for Humanity Home" sign to the 1834 lot. If you have a couple free hours, come out and lend us a hand.

We are so very grateful to Sean C. Henry Regional Manager at Klingner & Associates P. C. For doing the official survey of the lot at 1834. We are also thankful to the folks at Ameren who came out and took down the tree on the back of the lot. They took it down a lot further than they had told me when I left and we really appreciate it!

Yesterday (Saturday, April 11) a few of us went out on a Minor Repair job to build a wheelchair ramp. It was great to see everyone and do good work for this young person now confined to a wheelchair.

Afterward, several of us reconvened for our dear Phil’s Celebration of Life. It was a beautiful celebration and so nice to see so many folks come out to honor such a great guy. We know he would have been there helping us with the ramp if he could have. ❤️

As is often the case when we Habitat folk meet up… even in a social setting… it turned into a mini-meeting of the Habitat Construction Committee! So the update on our next Build is that we’re feeling ready to get rolling! Our Family Selection Committee has settled on our next Homeowner and we will be building on the lot right next to where we built our last home. Our team is working on getting the lot surveyed and we’re working with John A Logan to get the house staked out. John A Logan is already working on building our wall frames.

In the beginning a lot of work is done by contractors so we’re not asking for volunteers yet. We will keep you posted!
