A week-long fire training session for Carlin volunteer firemen, came to a close Aug. 4. The nightly classes, conducted by H.B. Matherly, fire service instructor of the State Department of Education, included basic fire fighting, the operation of motor fire apparatus, pump operation, uses of ladders, chemical retardents and tank vehicle fire fighting.
School was "recessed" briefly on four different occasions while trainees responded to calls not listed in the curriculum. A car fire on the highway, a blaze in a tie shed started by a carelessly tossed cigarette, a field fire in the west end of town and a car smoldering on Main Street provided four rounds of unscheduled action that gave new recruits experience in handling actual fires. "They did a good job," was the appraisal of Chief George Aiazzi.
A dinner marking the end of their special training was hosted by the VFD at the State Hotel, Aug. 5. Complete with a featured speaker and entertainment, the affair was held in honor of their wives, retiring members of the department and selected guests.
The clangor of a historic fire bell, the story of its acquisition one of the cherished legends of the department, announced "soup's on". The bell, suspended from a metal frame, is topped by a brass S.P. fire nozzle, a relic from the hose cart era.

We wish we knew what the "cherished legend" of the historic fire bell was.
