⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - It’s taken me months to read this. Not because it wasn’t good. It was fantastic (as her writing always is). It took me months to read this because I’ve been grieving (also the theme of this book) for the loss of what I thought this country was on the way to being.

Art is political so there’s no reason a Bookstagram account should shy away from it either. I’ve left META with my personal accounts because I don’t want to be part of the broligarchy anymore than I have to be.

This account, which I’ve been growing since 2020, will also be closing its virtual doors once I figure out a place that’s better suited to host it. This will mean saying goodbye (for now) to my book influencer dreams (😅) and the opportunity to get free merch (🙄)!

More than anything, leaving Instagram means that I’ll miss being able to meet new book peeps and seeing/engaging with what everyone is reading. I’ll still be reading, reviewing, and continuing to highlight authors and stories that this world needs more than ever and putting those books in my library. It just won’t happen on this platform.

Let Us Descend by Jesmyn Ward is now available.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - I reviewed a NetGalley digital ARC of this YA graphic novel in March of 2023 and my daughter just finished her physical copy. It’s in the library and such a great coming of age book with phenomenal art.

In Limbo by Deb J. J. Lee is now available.

𝗥𝗘𝗩𝗜𝗘𝗪: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I loved this page-turner of a mystery from its very start. The writing is good, the pacing works, and the characters are memorable. While I did get confused here and there from time skips back and forth between two (sometimes three) different periods and various characters, it worked in the end. A definite recommend.

The God of the Woods by Liz Moore is now available.

After starting off October strong with my favorite book of the year, 𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝘀𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗲, I wrapped up a very mixed bag of books this month with the wonderful page-turner, 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗼𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗼𝗼𝗱𝘀. Out of the 10,
4 were from the depths of my TBR pile, 1 was donated, and 5 were new. They’ve all been added to the library so happy reading!

𝗥𝗘𝗩𝗜𝗘𝗪: ⭐️

Have you ever found yourself stubbornly waiting for something to happen that may or may not happen, but you worry if you give up you’ll miss it when it does in fact happen (even though there was never a promise it would actually happen) and now that you’ve invested so much time in waiting for it to happen it seems ridiculous to stop waiting because surely something should happen (even though there’s no assurance something will happen) and then you finally get confirmation that that the thing you were waiting for is never going to happen?

By something I mean the plot. And by confirmation I mean finishing the last page.

Sigh.

Catherine House by Elisabeth Thomas is now available. It was a selection from Jenny Lawson’s book club the Fantastic Strangelings and it’s also signed. Give it a try. Maybe it’s just me.

𝗥𝗘𝗩𝗜𝗘𝗪: ⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️

I remember moving to Silicon Valley with my husband back in 2004 and when I asked how many women were in his very large engineering department he told me one. One single overly qualified and brilliant coder. I’d recently graduated from a woman’s college and couldn’t wrap my head around this. Slowly I became aware of the cult of male tech leaders and their legions of male devotees. And then I understood.

A few years later I discovered social media and after months of lurking I finally posted my first comment on a Twitter thread. A r**e threat came within the hour. And I remember shaking while looking at the accompanying photo. Over time I learned to block. Or stay quiet. Or become numb to the constant misogyny.

I have a lot to say about the behaviors of men online: of tech men and gamer men and bystander men and men who believe the world is theirs and resent sharing it for fear of losing what they believe is theirs by right. This book says a lot of it and I think that’s why I liked it so much.

Part thriller and part social commentary on the ever-present abuse women and minorities face online, We Are Watching Eliza Bright has a lot to say and it’s done in a compelling and often darkly funny way. It’s also horrifying.

There was so much to like here and I even liked the “we” narrator when used. Typically I’m not a fan of a collective voice because it feels too unreliable and too subjective, but it works really well here because it becomes the whole point.

We Are Watching Eliza Bright by A.E. Osworth is now available.

One step forward (in the smaller TBR pile) and two steps back (in the larger TBR pile). But let me tell you just how nice the Brookline Booksmith is and how easy they make it to spend money!!

Sigh.

𝗥𝗘𝗩𝗜𝗘𝗪: ⭐️⭐️ 1/2

When I was a teenager, David Lynch movies were all the rage. They had a definite vibe and the music was good. But they also gave me a certain kind of stress headache because I never really understood what was happening.

Let’s just say this book has that vibe: It’s got everything it needs to be a thrilling - albeit weird - coming of age story focused on a missing teen girl from a gated community adjacent to a Florida theme park.

Unfortunately, I never really knew what was happening and when I occasionally found my footing it was pulled out from me again on the next page. The collective “we” narration was uncomfortable (I don’t trust collective storytelling) and the intertwining first person time shifts threw me off.

And yet here and there were pieces of writing that made me gasp at their poignancy.

Brutes by Dizz Tate is now available.
