Today is the 54th anniversary of Title IX, a landmark federal civil rights law that is under threat from House Democrats in Pennsylvania.

Ironically, two Democrat senators - Patsy Mink and Birch Bayh - authored the original legislation that became Title IX. Its core purpose was to guarantee that all students, regardless of their gender, have access to education, athletics and campus resources.
This includes equal opportunity in sports.

Protecting those opportunities for female athletes is at the root of my House Bill 158, as well as House Bill 1849 and Senate bills 9 and 1293. These efforts to maintain the spirit and intent of Title IX by preventing biological males from participating in female sports are being ignored by House Democrat leaders who refuse to allow the bills to be debated and voted.

As these pieces of legislation get shuffled from committee to committee for obvious reasons, let's take time today to recognize Title IX, what it intended to do and who it attempted to respect and protect.

The tax cut proposal outlined in House Bill 2224 would eliminate a substantial tax currently paid by Pennsylvanians for the use of essential utility services. HB 2224 passed the House on Monday by a unanimous vote.

Today is Juneteenth National Freedom Day. Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when union soldiers reached Galveston, Texas, with news of the end of the Civil War, which had occurred two months earlier with the surrender of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee in Virginia.

The troops’ arrival also came two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, establishing that all enslaved people in Confederate states in rebellion against the Union “shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free.”

My office will be CLOSED today in honor of the holiday.

Although no cases have been detected in Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture has issued a quarantine order to prevent the introduction of New World Screwworm (NWS) into the state. The parasite has recently reappeared in parts of the southern United States.

New World Screwworm larvae feed on the living tissue of warm-blooded animals and can severely impact livestock and wildlife. While the parasite cannot survive Pennsylvania’s winter temperatures, it could still enter the state through infected animals during warmer months.

The quarantine places movement and import restrictions on animals such as cattle, sheep, goats, horses, swine, dogs, and cats. Any animal suspected of infestation, or originating from affected areas in New Mexico or Texas, must be examined by an accredited veterinarian before entering Pennsylvania. Animals from quarantined premises are barred from entering until cleared by state animal health officials.

Suspected cases should be reported immediately to a veterinarian and the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Animal Health and Diagnostic Services at 717-772-2852.

For additional information, residents may contact Penn State Extension in York County at 717-840-7408 or consult resources provided by USDA and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
