Dear Library Patrons,
I have a little important news to share with you today.
Since I began collecting Japanese books in 2005, and then opened the “Carlock Book Café” in 2009, more than 15 years have already passed. What started with about 1,000 books eventually grew to over 7,000 volumes, thanks to your generous donations and support.
On our monthly open days, people didn’t just come to borrow books—we shared conversations, and sometimes even potluck lunches together. Those moments became truly precious memories for us.
After experiencing the pandemic, and as my husband and I have now entered retirement, we have decided to close the library. It has been possible to continue this far only because of all of you, and I want to express my heartfelt gratitude.
As part of the closing, we will be giving away most of the books, free of charge, by reservation between October 1 and October 31. If you would like some, please contact me by email. Since I am retired, I am flexible and can meet you on weekdays, weekends, or evenings, whenever I am at home. Even those who have never visited the library before are warmly welcome.
Lastly, I want to say this: books are like treasure chests, filled with the wisdom and thoughts of humanity. Through them, I was able to share with you moments of inspiration, discovery, and friendship. That has been my greatest joy. I hope you will continue to enjoy many wonderful times with books in the future.
With gratitude,
Chizuko Tsukamoto Jaggard
