🚨 WINTER SAFETY ALERT: HEAT LAMP PRECAUTIONS 🚨

As temperatures drop across Eddy County, we know many of you are using heat lamps to keep your outdoor pets and livestock warm. While effective, heat lamps are a leading cause of winter structure fires if not used with extreme caution.

Please follow these critical safety guidelines from Eddy County Fire & Rescue:

🏗️ SECURE IT PROPERLY

• No Flimsy Clips: Hang lamps using chains or robust clamps. Do not rely on the spring clips that come with many lamps—they can easily slip.

• Keep Your Distance: Mount the lamp at least 20 inches away from the ground, bedding, or the animal.

• Add a Guard: Always use a wire cage or guard to prevent the bulb from touching flammable materials if it falls.

💡 EQUIPMENT MATTERS

• Outdoor Rated Only: Ensure your lamp is specifically labeled for outdoor use to withstand the elements.

• Bulb Choice: Use high-quality, hard glass bulbs that are less likely to shatter from temperature changes.

• Electrical Safety: Plug the lamp into an outlet with an arc fault interrupter (AFCI). Check cords for fraying and ensure animals cannot chew on them.

🧹 KEEP IT CLEAN & MONITORED

• Clear the Area: Keep the space free of cobwebs, dust, hay, and dry bedding, which can ignite instantly.

• Watch It: Monitor the setup closely. Do not leave heat lamps unattended for long periods if possible.

• Be Prepared: Keep a fire extinguisher nearby and ensure you have a smoke detector with an alarm loud enough to be heard from your house.

Let’s keep our community and our animals safe this winter!

🦃 PLANNING TO DEEP FRY YOUR TURKEY? READ THIS FIRST! 🦃

A deep-fried turkey is a delicious tradition, but it requires extra caution to keep your home and loved ones safe. If you are firing up the fryer this Thursday, please follow these critical safety tips from Eddy County Fire & Rescue:

BEFORE YOU START

❄️ Thaw & Dry: Ensure the turkey is 100% thawed and completely dry. Ice or water mixing with hot oil can cause a dangerous explosion.

📍 Location Matters: Always use the fryer outdoors on a flat, stable surface at least 10 feet away from your home, garage, or wooden decks.

📏 Don't Overfill: Measure your oil level with water before heating (and dry the pot after!). Overfilling causes oil to spill over onto the burner.

DURING THE FRY

🔥 Turn It Off: Turn off the burner before slowly lowering the turkey into the oil.

🧤 Gear Up: Wear heat-resistant gloves, long sleeves, and safety glasses to protect against splatter.

👀 Stay Alert: NEVER leave the fryer unattended.

🚫 Kid & Pet Free Zone: Keep children and pets at a safe distance, even after cooking, as the oil remains hot for a long time.

IN CASE OF EMERGENCY

🧯 Be Prepared: Keep a fire extinguisher rated for grease fires nearby.
💧 NO WATER: If a fire starts, turn off the gas immediately. NEVER use water on a grease fire—it will spread the flames. Use your extinguisher or cover with a metal lid.

On behalf of Eddy County Fire & Rescue, from our family to your family, have a safe Thanksgiving and happy holidays!

Eddy County Fire & Rescue Honors Our Veterans: Then and Now! 🇺🇸

As our graphic says, "We don't know them all, but we owe them all." Today, on Veterans Day, the Eddy County Fire & Rescue family extends our deepest gratitude to all who have served in the United States Armed Forces.

We hold a special respect for the veterans who now continue their commitment to service right here in our community. To the incredible veterans on our ECFR team—both career and volunteer—who once wore the uniform of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard: Thank you.

Your leadership, discipline, and courage learned in the military are now the foundational pillars of our department. You continue to serve our community with great honor and distinction.
Please join us in taking a moment today to thank a veteran. THANK YOU VETERANS, from Eddy County Fire & Rescue.

🔥 URGENT: Fall Burning Season is Here! 🔥

Eddy County Fire & Rescue is partnering with the New Mexico Forestry Division to promote safe and responsible prescribed fire as a crucial way to protect your land from catastrophic wildfires.

The Fall Burning Season is a critical time to act!

🛡️ Why Become a Certified Burn Manager?

New Mexico's Prescribed Burning Act offers huge benefits for responsible landowners:

• Risk Reduction: Prescribed fire is the most effective way to clear out hazardous fuels like brush, dead grass, and slash.

The New Mexico Forestry Division offers FREE training to become a Certified Burn Manager (for Pile Burning or Broadcast Burning).
Here are the course join codes to start your certification process today:
