Did you know you can treat invasive buckthorn stems in the winter?
Certain herbicides can be used when the temperatures are below freezing, so even in the winter the plants will take in the herbicide and kill the roots, preventing re-sprouting!
The Buckthorn Blaster is a great tool for carefully applying herbicide directly to recently cut buckthorn stumps. Avoid treating buckthorn in May and June, as the herbicide will be less effective when the tree is putting out leaves. Always be sure to read the label before using any product!

We are just under a month away from our Biochar Demonstration at the Cloquet Forestry Center. Come join us on March 8th to learn about our Biochar Project!
Today at the SWCD, we worked with our newly built Oregon Kilns to create Biochar. Biochar is a charcoal like product that can be made in these kilns by a process called pyrolysis. This process uses the heat and flames to char the biomass. Eventually, the flames are put out before the woody biomass is completely consumed. Biochar has been shown to help sequester Carbon, increase water and nutrient retention capabilities in soils, and it helps to reduce fuel loads. Our kilns were put together by students from the Cromwell-Wright Public School. Feel free to give Sam Horner a call if you want to learn more about Biochar or how we plan to use these kilns in the future.
