Last night, our members participated in hands-on propane emergency training. We spent the evening learning about propane, how it behaves during a fire, and most importantly, how to safely control a burning propane leak by shutting off the supply valve.
Training like this is especially important for our department because we proudly serve a rural community where many homes, farms, and businesses rely on propane every day. The more prepared we are, the better equipped we are to protect our community when emergencies happen.
A few interesting propane facts:
🔥 Propane burns at approximately 3,600°F, making it an extremely hot and dangerous fuel source.
🔥 One gallon of liquid propane can expand into about 270 gallons of propane v***r when released into the atmosphere.
🔥 Propane itself is colorless and odorless. The familiar “rotten egg” smell is an odorant added so leaks can be detected quickly.
🔥 Propane is stored as a liquid under pressure, but turns into a gas when released, allowing it to ignite rapidly if an ignition source is present.
