On Monday, May 18th, members of the Carmel Fire Department had the pleasure of visiting Carmel Nursery School to spend time with the students and teach them about fire safety.

The children learned about firefighters, what to do in an emergency, the importance of smoke alarms, and how firefighters wear special protective equipment to help keep our community safe. Students also had the opportunity to see one of our fire apparatus up close and ask lots of great questions!

We would like to thank the staff and students at Carmel Nursery School for welcoming us and allowing us the opportunity to help educate the next generation about fire safety.

If your school, community organization, civic group, daycare, senior center, or business is interested in scheduling a fire safety presentation, emergency preparedness program, or fire station visit, please reach out to the Carmel Fire Department. We are always happy to provide educational programs that help keep our community safe.

Carmel Fire Department Responds to Lithium-Ion Battery Fire

On Sunday, May 31, 2026, at approximately 3:06 PM, the Carmel Fire Department was dispatched to a reported structure fire on Cottage Drive in Carmel.

Upon arrival, firefighters found evidence of a fire within a residential garage/storage area. Crews quickly stretched a handline, checked for fire extension, and conducted ventilation and overhaul operations. The fire was brought under control before it could spread further into the residence.

The investigation determined the fire originated from a malfunctioning lithium-ion battery. While the fire was confined primarily to the area of origin, significant heat, smoke, and fire damage occurred within the garage, with smoke extending into portions of the home.

Carmel firefighters were assisted on scene by a FAST Team from the Yorktown Heights Volunteer FD. The Brewster Fire Department, while clearing another alarm assignment, was requested to provide assistance and support operations at the scene.
Carmel Police Department, NY also provided support throughout the incident.

Due to the hazards associated with damaged lithium-ion batteries, the Putnam County Bureau of Emergency Services Hazardous Materials Response Team was requested to assist with mitigation and handling of the battery involved in the incident. The Putnam County Bureau of Emergency Services Fire Investigation Team also responded and assisted in determining the cause and origin of the fire.

The photos from this incident serve as an important reminder of the dangers associated with lithium-ion batteries. These batteries are commonly found in power tools, rechargeable equipment, e-bikes, scooters, laptops, cell phones, and many other household devices. When damaged, improperly charged, or defective, they can fail violently and ignite surrounding materials within seconds.

Lithium-Ion Battery Safety Tips

✅ Use only manufacturer-approved batteries and chargers.
✅ Purchase products tested by a recognized safety laboratory.
✅ Charge batteries in open areas away from combustible materials.
✅ Store batteries at room temperature and inspect them regularly for damage.
✅ Install and maintain working smoke alarms throughout your home.

Never:

❌ Charge batteries on beds, couches, or other soft surfaces.
❌ Leave batteries charging unattended or overnight whenever possible.
❌ Use damaged, swollen, or overheating batteries.
❌ Dispose of lithium-ion batteries in household trash.

If you observe a battery smoking, hissing, overheating, or emitting an unusual odor, evacuate the area immediately and call 911.

Incidents like this highlight how quickly a small battery malfunction can escalate into a significant fire event. Early detection, functioning smoke alarms, and a rapid fire department response helped prevent more extensive damage and potential injury.
