It's Friday, let's Feature a hopeful adoptive Family!

Expectant parents, if you're considering adoption, we invite you to take a look at our prospective adoptive families! Some professionals may try to sell you on finding the "perfect" adoptive family for your baby. We look at it a little differently.

While we thoroughly screen our adoptive families during the home study process to ensure, to the best of our ability, health/stability/safety and more, none of them are perfect people. They are not inherently a better set of parents for your baby than you are. Don't let any professional or beautifully crafted profile (ours included) try to convince you otherwise.

And furthermore, Adoptive Parents, you don't deserve the pressure of trying to live up to some unrealistic expectation! You get to be imperfectly human, parents who will do the best they can and will experience all the joy/love -and- heartache/struggle parenting inevitably brings.

While our adoptive families aren't perfect and we don't expect them to be, we do take pride in the extensive adoption education they receive prior to being approved to adopt. We believe their hearts and homes are open and ready to love. They are prepared and hopeful to walk this lifelong, (sometimes) complex journey of adoption with you- if you ultimately decide it's the right decision for your baby.

A few words from Zane and Courtney, "We hope it goes without saying, but our life and your child's life would not be full without you in it. We hope to see you regularly (quarterly in person if possible!), grow in this journey together, have you meet our friends and family and vice versa, and prepare in every way for the hope of the next generation. We want your child to have a life full of friends, loved ones, play time, education formal and experienced, laughter and love."

Post Placement Wednesday over here, where we navigate all things after an adoption has taken place!

Any given Wednesday could include search/reunion support, connecting birth parents with counseling, assisting both adoptive and birth parents in navigating the complexities of open adoption and much much more!

We recently help our spring fling for the triad! Adoptive and birth families navigating open adoptions (with contact) came together for a morning of donuts, coffee, crafts and the Easter Bunny! It was incredibly special to see 12 triads all in one place, connecting and celebrating a holiday/season together.

These days when we talk about open adoption we are careful to do so with intention and nuance. We are listening and learning. For the last two decades and currently still, open adoption is regularly sold as a cure all. Expectant parents considering adoption are told, “Open adoption will make this decision easier. You can do this because you’ll get to see your child grow up.”

There are a lot of beautiful open adoption relationships out there. We witnessed a dozen of them at our recent event. But even these relationships are not without complexity, times of struggle, in need of ongoing tending, flexibility and growth. We believe in the importance of open adoption, but it is not a fix all for the loss and grief inherent in adoption. We have to stop selling it as such.

Let’s continue to support and champion these vital relationships but let’s do so in a way that honors both their importance and beauty and their challenges/shortcomings.

We had a bunny sighting today! They are ready to make their appearance at the Spring Fling tomorrow!

Rain is in the forecast but we are still planning on having the festivities as long as there are no severe storms. Event will be outside but under a covered pavilion. Bring your sweatshirts and rain jackets and be ready for some fun! We're looking forward to seeing many of you there tomorrow!

It's post placement Wednesday and thought we'd give you an update on our upcoming event for the entire adoption triad!

The event registration is FULL! This is probably one of the first events we've hosted to have fill this quickly and to capacity. It's incredible to see birth and adoptive families eager to find space and time to connect. And, to do so with others navigating a similar journey.

Open adoption is complex. It's both having a spirit of openness and (hopefully) connection, too. It's an important piece of the puzzle but not a cure/fix all, for either birth family or the adoptee. It's a lifelong journey of forming and navigating (hopefully) genuine, loving, committed relationships. It takes resilience, determination, flexibility, humility, grace, love and so much more.

We're really excited to connect with these families, birth and adoptive on April 5th!

Please know, if you are not in connection with your entire triad currently (even though many of you likely wish you were or hope to be in the future), we will be hosting an event for adoptive families this summer and one for birth parents in the fall. Stay tuned.

A few words from Adam and Amanda, "We promise to cultivate a relationship between you and your child. We envision visits with you 3-4 times per year...In the future, as we build our relationship, we would love for it grow into something more frequent. We would love for you to be able to come to birthday parties and sporting events, join us for a day at the zoo. You are so important to us and to your child, and we want your child to know you."

Can't believe we're already into March! This year is chugging right along!

Our monthly virtual support group for birth mothers is this coming SUNDAY! We'd love to "see" you there. The journey of grieving and healing for parents who have placed a child for adoption is lifelong. You deserve support, connection and a safe space as you process the complexities of such a difficult decision. If you did not place through ASC, that's ok. You are still welcome and encouraged to attend the groups we offer.

As always, if you placed through ASC and group support doesn't sound like the right fit currently, we offer FREE counseling for birth parents in their post placement journey with an adoption fluent therapist. It doesn't matter if you placed last week or 25 years ago, these services are still available to you. Reach out via email [email protected] or call 317-255-5916 to be connected with a therapist. We'd love to hear from you.

There is a version of adoption some (if not many) professionals are still "selling” expectant parents. We say still because we’ve been there, done that. But in the words of Maya Angelou, “when you know better, do better.”

This version, born (potentially with initial good intentions) from the shame and coercion of the baby scoop era, developed into the brave love narrative through positive adoption language, is not the full story. And, it’s potentially just as coercive as the forced adoptions of earlier decades. Just packaged differently.

( We think we first learned the above from you. We have you and to thank for helping us really start to lean in and listen to birth mothers and their experience, insights and knowledge. This blog likely contains some ideas and words we got directly from you both and want to make sure and give you credit. Now, we're listening to and learning from a broad array of birth parents and you two really started it all. Thank you for your bravery in your healing and advocacy work.)

Expectant parents making difficult decisions deserve better. They need the facts, accurate information and a more nuanced look at the complexities of choosing adoption for their infant/child before making this permanent decision.

Expectant Parents considering adoption: If you are in a place where you need to consider or choose adoption, you have the right to do so safely and without pressure, shame or judgement. We’re not trying to talk you into or out of adoption. We’re hoping to give you a more honest, accurate picture as you make difficult decisions. We are here and can help. Please reach out today.

It's Valentine's Day and a Friday - so let's bring ya a little Follow Friday action! Because one of the things we love to do most is point you in the direction of quality adoption resources, education and support!

If you haven't already, give Jessie Mattos a follow at her new account! Jessie is a birth mom and she's sharing her experience, insight and adoption knowledge with us. We love learning from Jessie because she educates with compassion, nuance, heart and even humor!

We picked today specifically, the day of love, to share Jessie's account with you because she has recently posted some great content about adoption and love. There is absolutely love in adoption. But, it can be a complex kind of love. And, the ways we talk about love and adoption is important. It has the potential to heal or cause further harm, hurt. Head on over to Jessie's account and keep an eye out for a little love content!

Thank you, Jessie, for sharing your heart and insight with all of us! We're better because of it!

Reminder, when you enter the online space of an adoptee or birth parent, proceed gently and with open hearts and minds. Be ready to listen and learn. Engage with their content in helpful ways - comment, like, share. Support their work monetarily if there are ways to do so. If you're struggling with something they've posted, challenge yourself to sit with it awhile before you chime in or ask questions. Be kind and respectful!
