Special Patrol Officers play an important role in supporting public safety by providing security at county facilities, assisting deputies during operations, responding to emergencies, and helping keep our community safe.

Minimum Qualifications:
▪️ Retired law enforcement professional authorized under NYS General Municipal Law §209-v
▪️ Retired within the past four (4) years*
▪️ Resident of Putnam County or a contiguous New York county

SOUTHEAST
Deputies arrested a driver after responding to a report of a pickup truck damaging a yard while doing donuts. The driver was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon (4th Degree), Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation, and other Vehicle and Traffic Law offenses.

SOUTHEAST
Following a vehicle pursuit and brief foot pursuit, deputies arrested two individuals. Both were charged with Resisting Arrest and Obstructing Governmental Administration. The driver was additionally charged with Reckless Driving, while the passenger was held as a Fugitive from Justice on an extraditable warrant from Florida.

PHILIPSTOWN
During a traffic stop, deputies arrested a driver for Operating with a Suspended New York Driver’s License and possessing fraudulent temporary license plates.

SOUTHEAST
Deputies arrested three individuals following a larceny investigation at a local business. They were charged with Criminal Possession of Stolen Property (4th Degree), Unlawful Possession of Personal Identification Information (3rd Degree), and Petit Larceny.

NEGOTIATORS BRING MAN TO SAFETY AFTER HOURS-LONG CLIFFSIDE CRISIS

On Tuesday, August 25, at about 3:48 p.m., the Cold Spring Police Department received a 911 call through the Putnam County 911 Center reporting that a missing 34-year-old man experiencing a mental health crisis was believed to be in the area of Hudson Highlands State Park. Putnam County Sheriff’s Office Deputies Sean Kane and Jared Gramble responded to assist the Cold Spring Police Department.

Deputies Kane and Gramble hiked the Washburn Trail and located the man standing on a cliff ledge. After making contact, they immediately began communicating with him while additional specialized resources responded to the scene, including the Putnam County Hostage Negotiation Team, the Westchester County Police Hostage Negotiation Team, and the Westchester County Police Emergency Services Unit.

For approximately two hours, Putnam County Hostage Negotiator, Investigator Matthew Tunney, remained in constant communication with the man, patiently building trust and encouraging him to return to safety.

Following the prolonged negotiation, the man voluntarily stepped away from the cliff and was safely escorted from the area without injury. He was transported to a local hospital for evaluation.

“I’m incredibly proud of everyone who responded to this incident,” said Sheriff Brian Hess. “This was a true team effort that required patience, professionalism, and compassion. Thanks to the dedication of our deputies, negotiators, and partner agencies, this individual was unharmed and received the help he needed.”

The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office thanks all of the agencies and personnel who assisted during this incident, including the Cold Spring Police Department, Westchester County Police, New York State Police, New York State Park Police, Putnam County Bureau of Emergency Services, the Cold Spring, North Highlands, and Garrison Fire Departments, members of the Orange County Technical Rescue Team, and all Putnam County Sheriff’s Office personnel whose professionalism, coordination, and teamwork helped bring this incident to a safe resolution.

SCAM ALERT ⚠️

The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office has recently received reports of scammers impersonating law enforcement and other government agencies in an attempt to steal money from residents.

The callers may falsely claim they are from the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, the U.S. Marshals Service, the Social Security Administration, or another government agency. They often threaten legal action or arrest unless you immediately move money, purchase gift cards, or transfer funds to a “safe” account.

Remember:

• The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office will never call you demanding money or instruct you to move funds to avoid arrest.
• We will never ask for payment using gift cards, cryptocurrency, or wire transfers.
• If you receive a suspicious call, hang up immediately. If you’re unsure whether the call is legitimate, contact our office directly using a trusted phone number—not one provided by the caller.

Scammers rely on fear and urgency. Take a moment, verify the information, and talk with a trusted family member before sending money.

An incident at a local business resulted in the arrest of an individual on charges of Unlawful Imprisonment and Endangering the Welfare of a Child.

SOUTHEAST
Deputies received a report of scammers impersonating the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office and other government agencies in an attempt to steal money from a resident. The victim recognized the scam and did not send any money.

Members of the Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Special Investigations Unit executed a search warrant as part of an ongoing investigation, resulting in the arrest of one individual.

The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office is participating in the New York STOP-DWI High Visibility Engagement Campaign through Labor Day.

Motorists can expect to see increased DWI enforcement throughout Putnam County as deputies work to identify and remove impaired drivers from our roadways.

DANBURY MAN ARRESTED ON FELONY GUN CHARGE FOLLOWING TRAFFIC STOP

Sheriff Brian Hess announces the arrest of Aaron Freeze, 30, of Danbury, Connecticut, on a felony weapons charge following a traffic stop in the Town of Patterson.

On August 12, 2026, at approximately 7:06 p.m., Putnam County Sheriff’s Deputy Nick Trupia observed a vehicle traveling in the Putnam Lake area with an expired registration and an obstructed license plate.

During the traffic stop investigation, it was determined that the vehicle’s registration was expired and that the vehicle did not have valid insurance. Freeze subsequently advised deputies on scene that there was a handgun inside the vehicle.

Deputies recovered a loaded Smith & Wesson handgun from the passenger-side floor area of the vehicle. Freeze did not possess a New York State pistol permit or any other valid pistol permit.

Freeze was taken into custody and transported to the Putnam County Correctional Facility for processing. He was charged with Criminal Possession of a Firearm, a Class E felony, and was issued an appearance ticket directing him to appear in the Town of Patterson Justice Court at a later date.

Freeze was also issued multiple traffic tickets, and the vehicle was towed from the scene.

( All suspects mentioned in this release are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. )
