Stronger Together: Indiana’s First Female Firefighter Camp hosted in Hamilton County

What began as an idea at the Westfield Fire Department grew into a countywide collaboration, bringing together firefighters from Westfield, Carmel, Noblesville Fire Department, Fishers Fire Department, and Cicero Fire Department to support the next generation of women in the fire service. H.E.R.S was founded and hosted Indiana's Inaugural female firefighter camp.

H.E.R.S stands for Honor, Equity, Respect and Sisterhood.

The camp brought together women ages 18 and older at every stage of their journey for hands-on training, mentorship, and an opportunity to explore the profession with no cost to participants. Over two action packed days, participants practiced victim rescues, search techniques, hoseline advancement, and forcible entry while learning from experienced firefighters and instructors.

Danielle Carey Tolan, Chief of Staff for the City of Westfield served as a guest speaker. She shared encouragement and support with participants and the Hamilton County firefighters who made the weekend possible, emphasizing confidence, leadership, and embracing new opportunities.

Beyond the training, the camp fostered meaningful connections, conversations, and a strong support network for women pursuing this demanding and rewarding career.

When neighboring departments unite with a shared purpose, we create opportunities that strengthen the future of the fire service across Hamilton County.

The Carmel Fire Department is proud to be part of this effort and grateful to the Westfield Fire Department for bringing this vision to life. Thank you to every participating department, firefighter, instructor, volunteer, sponsor, and community partner who contributed time, knowledge, and resources.

Together, we are strengthening partnerships, creating opportunities, and inspiring the next generation of firefighters.

🍂🔥 Cooler weather is here, and heating season has started for some!

When you fire up your furnace for the first time this fall, you might notice a faint burning smell. Often, that’s just dust burning off as the system heats up. It should go away relatively quickly.

🏠 Before your furnace settles in for the colder months, take a minute to change your furnace filter. A dirty filter can restrict airflow and make your system work harder. A clean filter helps keep your heating system running efficiently.

🥶 Now, let’s settle a debate…

Are you a holdout piling on the layers refusing to turn on the heat until November, or did you crank the furnace up already?

Maddox, thank you for stepping up when it mattered most! 👏💪🏾 Carmel is proud of you! Have you ever thought about a career in the fire service? 🚒👀

Tonight, we're shouting out Senior 1 athlete Maddox Larger. Earlier today, Maddox made a heroic water rescue in the Delaware Trace neighborhood. While he was out fishing with his brother, an individual lost control of a double stroller and went into a retention pond. Maddox swam out and saved the adult, toddler, and infant, bringing them all to shore. He performed rescue breathing and called 911. We are extraordinarily proud of this young man's quick actions in the face of this emergency today... and then he came to swim practice, where his coaches snapped this picture. Well done, Maddox!

We love a cozy fire on a cool evening just as much as anyone, but please remember: burning leaves, brush, or yard waste is not allowed in the City of Carmel.

These types of fires can create thick smoke that can settle in neighborhoods, seep into nearby homes, and cause health issues for residents, especially those with asthma or other sensitivities.

✅ Be a good neighbor.
✅ Enjoy your fire safely and legally.
✅ Check Carmel’s open burning ordinance before lighting up.

The Carmel Fire Department would like to congratulate Battalion Chief Jeffrey Capshaw on his retirement and his 37 years of dedicated service to the Carmel Fire Department and the community. Battalion Chief Capshaw's retirement ceremony and last call will take place on October 16, 2026, at 4:30 p.m. at Carmel Fire Department Headquarters on the third floor - 210 Veterans Way Carmel, IN

Join the Carmel Fire Department for our annual Open House TODAY - Tuesday, October 6, from 5:00–7:00 p.m. Stop by any of our neighborhood fire stations to tour the station, check out our fire engines, meet the firefighters who serve your community, and learn some important fire safety tips.

This year, you can also explore our S.A.F.E. (Stay Alive Family Education) House and experience hands-on fire safety scenarios, then take a step back in time at the Carmel Fire Buffs Museum, both located inside Fire Headquarters.
The event is FREE, and no registration is required. Bring the whole family and come see what happens behind the garage doors! ❤️‍🔥
