Memorial Day stands as a solemn occasion dedicated to remembering and honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation. We ask that you take this moment to reflect on the bravery, dedication, and selflessness of the fallen heroes whose courage ensures our safety and freedom.
This day is not only an opportunity to pay respects but also a reminder of the profound costs of liberty. The men and women who laid down their lives embody the highest ideals of service and sacrifice. Their commitment transcends personal safety, reflecting a profound duty to protect their communities and country.
As we observe Memorial Day, we acknowledge the deep gratitude owed to these individuals and their families, who bear the enduring weight of loss. The White County Sheriff Department encourages all citizens to pause and remember the sacrifices that have shaped the freedoms we hold dear. Whether through ceremonies, moments of silence, or acts of remembrance, honoring these heroes strengthens our collective commitment to uphold the values they defended.
In closing, Sheriff Weiss and his department extend their heartfelt appreciation to every fallen service member. Their legacy is a lasting beacon of courage and patriotism, inspiring us to cherish peace and work toward a safer future for all. 🇺🇸

Memorial Day, a federal holiday held the last Monday in May, is the nation's foremost annual day to mourn and honor its deceased service men and women. Originally called Decoration Day, it was formalized by a "Memorial Day Order" issued by
Grand Army of the Republic
Commander-in-Chief John A. Logan in 1868.

Wishing everyone a safe Memorial Day weekend. We ask on Monday you take a moment of to honor all those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service of our country. Thank you to those men and women paying the price for the freedoms we are privileged to have today. You are never forgotten. 🇺🇸🇺🇸

Peace Officers Memorial Day
Friday, May 15, 2026

May 15 honors Peace Officers Memorial Day a tribute to local, state, and federal law enforcement officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice or been injured in the line of duty. The observance takes place during Police Week.

Many organizations, government agencies, and private citizens fly flags at half-staff in memory of those officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Citizens also burn a blue light outside their homes to remember the fallen. Please take a moment today and say a prayer for those lost or injured in the line of duty and their families.
We will never forget.

Honoring the Courage and Sacrifice of Law Enforcement: National Police Week 2026

Each year, the United States observes National Police Week to recognize and honor the dedication, service, and ultimate sacrifice of law enforcement officers. Established in 1962 by a joint resolution of Congress and proclaimed by President John F. Kennedy, National Peace Officers Memorial Day falls on May 15, with National Police Week encompassing the calendar week in which this date lies. In 2026, National Police Week will be observed from May 11 to May 17.
This solemn week pays special tribute to the men and women who have lost their lives in the line of duty while protecting the safety and well-being of their communities. Tragically, in 2025 alone, eighty-one law enforcement officers across the nation were killed serving their communities, a poignant reminder of the risks inherent in this vital profession. Of the 363 names added to the wall this year two are from Illinois. Officer Krystal Rivera (Chicago Police Department, E.O.W. 06-05-2025) and Detective Tim Jones (Park Forest Police Department, E.O.W. 12-03-2025).

National Police Week activities, centered in Washington, D.C., offer a powerful opportunity for the public to reflect on the sacrifices made by officers and to support their families. The White County Sheriff Department invites all citizens to take a moment during this week to remember those who have fallen and to express gratitude for the ongoing commitment of law enforcement. Light up your houses with blue lights to observe this very solemn week.
We extend heartfelt thanks to every officer serving across the country for their courage and dedication. Special recognition is due to the deputies and law enforcement officers of White County, whose unwavering service is deeply appreciated. Their daily efforts embody the spirit of protection and sacrifice that National Police Week solemnly commemorates.
As we observe this important week, let us renew our commitment to supporting those who safeguard our communities and honor the memory of those who gave their lives in the line of duty.
