Why should you and your family attend the Juneteen Celebration (on June 28th)? Because the story of freedom belongs to all of us.

Join us on June 28th at Miller's Carnation, from 1-3:30 pm. Learn more about the significance of this important national holiday. Walk in the footsteps of Opal Lee, the grandmother of Juneteenth, who still at 97 annually makes a two-and-a-half-mile pilgrimage to commemorate 1865, when more than 250,000 enslaved Black people in Texas learned that they were finally free, marking the true end of slavery in America. Finally on June 17, 2021 President Biden signed a bill into law that made Juneteenth a national holiday.

We hope you will join us! For more information: email [email protected]. Hosted by the Sustainable Resource Collective and First Light Farm & Learning Center.

We humans are indebted to plants for our very existence. Indigenous Peoples from diverse locations refer to the plants as The First People. This class will explore some of our local plants and how people have used their gifts: for food, medicine, tools, and whatever else time allows.

Bring your curiosity and willingness to explore the plants of early summer, focusing on a select group that are particularly used for food/medicine. This class will cover skills and resources for plant ID, taxonomy, and understanding field journals/plant cards. Recipes will be provided for preparations using those plants. We will explore what is blooming and practice identification skills. Resources will be provided as well as what to bring to class.

Limited to 12 participants. $60 per person. Register online: https://firstlightfarm-upick.square.site/

Do you know someone who is struggling to pay the rising costs of food? First Light Farm & Learning Center (Carnation) has received a grant from King County to provide 8 Mini Farms (10'x30' garden plots) for free to any individual or family who is struggling financially and would like to learn how to grow their own produce.

The grant provides for a high tunnel (which we teach you how to build), plant starts, irrigation supplies, landscape fabric, and ongoing support to ensure your success.

Please share this program with others. Interested families can contact us at [email protected] or text 206-719-8602 to set up an appointment to come to the farm and see what's possible! Let's grow food together!
