On August 27, 2026, Carpinteria-Summerland FD was dispatched to assist Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office (SBSO) Santa Barbara County Sheriff for a smoke investigation in the dense vegetation between the 5400 and 5500 block of Carpinteria Avenue. Upon arrival, just after midnight, CSFD Medic Engine 61 (Captain Johan Nilsson, Engineer Taylor Barnett, and Firefighter/Paramedic Max Klett) observed a bright orange glow and flames coming from a moderate to heavy vegetation area on the Carpinteria Creek bike path.

After getting a closer look, the call was upgraded and CSFD Medic Engine 62 was (Captain Dave Baker, Engineer Kenan Marting, and Firefighter/Paramedic Camila Shafer) requested to assist with a fully involved hidden subterranean structure that was confirmed as a homeless encampment. CSFD Battalion 65 (BC Brian Roberson) managed the expanded incident operations, and CSFD crews aggressively attacked the fire and extinguished it using foam operations, stopping the spread of the fire within the vegetation or to any the nearby structures on opposite sides of the creek path area. In addition, CSFD Fire Marshal/Fire Investigator (Mike LoMonaco) was requested and responded to deploy CSFD’s Drone 1 to provide real-time aerial intelligence, thermal hotspot detection, and precise perimeter mapping.

No injuries were identified, and the fire is under investigation. Additionally, the CSFD has been coordinating with the SBSO’s and the City of Carpinteria City of Carpinteria Code Enforcement Division to follow up on the homeless encampment/subterranean bunker area that has been identified as having a history of being a problem and safety risk in the area, as well as the individual identified as potentially being responsible for the incident.

CSFD has had a busy summer supporting wildfire operations throughout California and across the West.

Most recently, Engine 362 returned home August 20 after back-to-back assignments on the Antelope and Timber incidents. Captain Brian Bull, Engineer Kenan Marting and Firefighter/Paramedic Cami Schafer supported firefighting and structure-protection operations near Big Sur. Strike Team 1521C was led by CSFD Captain/Strike Team Leader Dave Baker.

Firefighter/Paramedic Pat Cockrum and Firefighter/Paramedic Justin Martin served with California Incident Management Team 7 on the Pioneer Fire in Colorado, followed by assignments on the Fox Fire in Oregon and Old Trails Fire near Spokane.

Engineer Chas Donner served as a Fireline Paramedic on the Biscar Fire and later deployed to the Gann Fire with Engineer Todd Skupien, Firefighter Dan Fawcett and Firefighter/Paramedic Cami Schafer.

Captain Han Domini returned August 17 after serving as a Task Force Leader on the Coleman Creek and Big Grass fires in Oregon. The Big Grass Fire became the largest wildfire in Oregon’s recorded history by total incident acreage.

These deployments take a full-team effort — from those serving in the field, to the members maintaining coverage at home, to the families supporting them throughout extended assignments. We’re grateful to our regional partners — Montecito Fire Santa Barbara City Fire Dept Vandenberg FireDepartment and Santa Maria Firefighters — for serving alongside our crews throughout these assignments.

COMMUNITY UPDATE 🚒
Wildland Deployments

Most of our personnel and crews deployed to statewide and interstate incidents recently returned home briefly before being reassigned to new incidents.

Two Firefighters remain assigned with California Interagency Incident Management Team 7 (CAIIMT-7) to the Old Trails Incident near Spokane, Washington, and one Captain remains assigned to the Coleman Creek Fire in Oregon. One Firefighter previously assigned to the Ward Fire in Nevada has since been reassigned to an active incident in New Mexico.

Our Type 3 Wildland/All-Hazard Engine 362 and crew, along with an Acting Battalion Chief/Captain serving as Strike Team Leader, returned from the Gann Fire in Calaveras County on August 8 and were subsequently reassigned, with a partially new crew, to the Antelope Fire in San Luis Obispo County. They are joined by a Strike Team Leader Trainee from Lompoc City Fire Department and crews from Santa Barbara City Fire Dept Montecito Fire Santa Maria Firefighters and Vandenberg FireDepartment.

We anticipate our Strike Team returning within the next couple of days, barring another reassignment, while our single-resource personnel are expected to return or be reassigned within the next 10–14 days.

All of our deployed personnel are doing well. We are equally grateful for those providing additional coverage at home, allowing us to support our partners inside and outside California, and for the families supporting our personnel throughout these deployments — all a valued part of our Carpinteria-Summerland Fire family.

Carpinteria-Summerland Fire District remains fully staffed and ready to serve our communities.

It has already been an active summer for the fire service across the western United States and internationally. The Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District, along with our Santa Barbara County Fire Dept and Ventura County Fire Department agencies, and our Southern California and statewide mutual aid partners, continues to assist with incidents across the West and here at home in California.

Over the past several weeks, we have deployed several of our Carpinteria-Summerland Professional Firefighters to Oregon and Washington. Some have returned home for only a few days before being redeployed due to the extraordinary number of active fires across the Pacific Northwest.

Current assignments include:

* Two Firefighters – Old Trails Incident (Washington)
* One Captain – Coleman Creek Fire (Oregon)
* One Firefighter – Ward Fire (Nevada)

After 37 years in the fire service, we proudly recognize Engineer Dan Hagstrom as he retires from the Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District.

Dan began his fire service career with CAL FIRE in 1989. In October 2001, we were fortunate to welcome him into the Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District family. Through his knowledge, experience, and dedication to his profession, Dan promoted to Fire Engineer in December 2008, a position he served and with pride throughout his career.

For the past 25 years, Dan has been a steady and trusted presence within our District. His calm demeanor, extensive experience, and willingness to share his knowledge have been an extraordinary gift to those around him. His professionalism and quiet example have helped shape and support the firefighters who have had the opportunity to work alongside him.

Outside of the fire station, Dan is a devoted husband to Patrice and a proud father of two sons. The support of his family has been an important part of his journey and this well-earned milestone in his fire service career.

Engineer Hagstrom’s 37 years in the fire service represent a career built on integrity, professionalism, and service to others. His contributions to our agency will continue to be valued and remembered for years to come.

Congratulations Dan on your retirement. After 37 years of answering the call, it’s time to enjoy this next chapter with the family who has supported you every step of the way. 🚒🔥❤️

After more than two decades of dedicated service, we proudly recognize CAPTAIN KELLEY BAKER as he retires from the Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District.

Kelley joined the District in October 2002 as a Firefighter/Paramedic and through hard work, dedication, and leadership, rose through the ranks to become a Fire Captain. Throughout his career, he served as President of Local 3368, was an active member of our Peer Support Team, and remained committed to supporting both his fellow firefighters and the community we proudly serve.

Raised in Summerland, Kelley had the rare opportunity to serve the community where he grew up. There are few greater honors than protecting the place you call home, and throughout his career, he did so with dedication, humility, and pride. His steady leadership and commitment have left a lasting mark on our organization, and on many firefighters who have had the privilege of serving alongside him.

Beyond the badge, Kelley is a devoted husband to Cindy and a proud father of four.

On behalf of the Carpinteria – Summerland Fire Protection District, thank you, Captain Baker, for your years of service, leadership and mentorship. Your contributions have strengthened our District and will continue to be felt for years to come.
