Carrabassett Valley Fire Department reminds all residents that working smoke detectors, propane gas detectors, and carbon monoxide detectors are essential for home safety.

• Install smoke detectors on every level of your home and in all sleeping areas.
• Install carbon monoxide detectors outside all sleeping areas and on each level.
• Install propane gas detectors if your home uses propane.
• Test all detectors monthly and replace batteries as needed.
• Replace smoke detectors every 10 years and CO detectors as recommended by the manufacturer.

These devices provide early warning and save lives. Make sure your home is protected. If an alarm ever sounds and you’re unsure why, evacuate and call 911.

12/13/2025

Carrabassett Valley Fire Department urges everyone to treat all CO alarm activations as serious emergencies. Carbon monoxide is odorless, colorless, and can be life-threatening.
If your CO alarm sounds:
• Evacuate the building immediately.
• Call 911 from a safe location.
• Do not open windows or try to ventilate the building.
• Do not re-enter until cleared by fire department.
CO alarms save lives.

Tonight, Carrabassett Valley Fire & Rescue proudly celebrated the well-earned retirement of Chief Courtney Knapp after an extraordinary 49 years of dedicated service to our community.

Chief Knapp joined the Carrabassett Valley Fire Department in 1977 as a firefighter. He was appointed Lieutenant in 1985, Deputy Fire Chief in 1989, and in 1992 he was appointed to the role of Fire Chief, a position he has honorably held for more than three decades.

Throughout his career, Chief Knapp led countless major improvements that will benefit our town for generations to come. His accomplishments include the construction of our fire station, the purchase of multiple fire trucks — including a ladder truck, and the leadership behind several important local fire safety ordinances that continue to safeguard our residents today. He also pioneered the per diem staffing program, significantly improving emergency response times.

Over nearly five decades, Chief Knapp has responded to hundreds of emergencies, always answering the call with professionalism, dedication, and compassion.

Tonight’s retirement celebration was standing room only with over 100 people in attendance, a true reflection of the impact he has had on this community. Chief Knapp’s last official day of service is December 31.

Chief Knapp, the town of Carrabassett Valley is forever safer because of your commitment, leadership, and sacrifice. Thank you for a lifetime of service. Enjoy your retirement and point em downhill!

The Carrabassett Valley Fire Department has started a Knox Box program to improve the safety of residents of Sugarloaf and Carrabassett Valley. The keys for these boxes are secured on fire department vehicles with a "key secure" which only allows the key to be removed using a code that is unique to each firefighter. Additionally, this system also ensures each time the Knox key is removed from a fire department vehicle a log is recorded of the date, time, and firefighter using the key. The Carrabassett Valley Fire Department will be the only ones with a key to these Knox Boxes. The Knox company offers several different types and styles of box's and can be found in there catalog. The two standard boxes are the residential box, that is designed for single family homes, holding one key and the commercial box designed to hold up to ten keys, which is ideal for apartment buildings, commercial buildings, or multi-unit condominiums. Ordering of residential Knox Boxes can be done through the Carrabassett Valley Fire Department. Ordering of commercial Knox boxes is done through the R.B Allen company. The Carrabassett Valley Fire Department will offer installation of residential Knox Boxes at no additional cost. If you are interested in a Residential or Commercial Knox box, please fill out this form and call the Carrabassett Valley Fire Department at 207-237-2991. While the Carrabassett Valley Fire Department provides service to the community 24/7, 365 days a year, we can not always get to the phone, feel free to leave a message with your name and number, so we can get back to you.
