CARRBORO, NC -- The Carrboro Town Council has proclaimed Oct. 1-8, 2026, as Week Without Driving, encouraging residents, businesses and Town staff to experience getting around without a car and explore ways to make transportation more accessible for everyone.
Nearly one in three people in the United States cannot drive, including people with disabilities, older adults, young people and those who cannot afford a vehicle. Week Without Driving is a national campaign that invites community members, advocates and elected officials to experience the everyday transportation challenges faced by nondrivers.
Carrboro is committed to building a safe and accessible transportation network for everyone, whether they walk, bike, roll or ride public transit. Participating in Week Without Driving offers an opportunity to identify gaps in sidewalks, bike facilities and transit connections while building support for a more connected community.
Ready to take the challenge? Here are a few ways to participate:
🚴🏽‍♂️Go car-free! Try getting around without driving for the full week, or even just one day. Share your experience with family, coworkers or on social media.
📅Join a local event! Participate in or help promote Walk & Roll to School Day on Wednesday, Oct. 7.
💗Give back! Volunteer at Carrboro's bike co-op, the Recyclery, on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park.

This month, we’re celebrating the retirement of Brian Griffith, our Street Maintenance Supervisor — and if you see him working behind the scenes at the Carrboro Music Festival this weekend, be sure to say congratulations!
Brian was there for the very first Music Festival back in the 1990s. Now, more than three decades later, he’s helping make another one happen as he wraps up his career with the Town.
What’s next?
“I’m not going to sit around, that’s for sure,” Brian says.
He’ll keep volunteering with the Efland Volunteer Fire Department, stay involved with his church, and enjoy more time with his wife, Terri, and family.
So what kept him at Carrboro for 34 years?
“It’s the people. A great group of people.”
That pretty much says it all.
And if you’ve ever heard Brian’s phone ring, you might recognize the Sanford and Son theme song — his special ringtone for calls from Solid Waste.
Brian, thank you for 34 years of hard work, good humor and service to Carrboro. You’ve helped build a lot of this town’s story — and we’re grateful.
Congratulations on your retirement, Brian! You’ll be missed! ❤️

The Town of Carrboro is seeking volunteers to provide a fresh perspective on important local issues. Carrboro local government has various advisory boards and commissions that advise the Town Council on a wide range of issues. We are currently looking to fill vacancies!

When you serve, you become an advocate for the Town of Carrboro, provide feedback to the Council, and help strengthen the community with your unique perspective. It’s a great opportunity to meet new people as you put your ideas into action. The Town of Carrboro strives for diverse representation on volunteer boards and commissions. Residents of all backgrounds, identities, and perspectives are encouraged to apply.

Volunteers are appointed by the Town Council and have the opportunity to directly influence local decisions, policies, and priorities.

We have openings on the following advisory boards and commission for the Town of Carrboro:

✅ Climate and Environmental Advisory Commission (2 vacancies including a youth seat)
✅ Economic Sustainability (3 vacancies)
✅ Recreation, Parks & Cultural Resources Advisory Board (6 vacancies)
✅ Housing and Human Services Commission (3 vacancies)
✅ Racial Equity Commission (3 vacancies)
✅ Transportation, Mobility & Greenways Advisory Commission (multiple vacancies)

✅ In addition, the Orange Water and Sewer Authority (OWASA) Board of Directors has a vacancy for a Carrboro representative effective Sept. 30, 2026.The nine-member OWASA Board of Directors acts as the autonomous governing body managing water, reclaimed water, and wastewater services for the Carrboro-Chapel Hill area. Responsibilities include setting customer rates, defining infrastructure investments, and implementing public health or environmental policies.

🚌 Ride FREE: Leave the car parked and take advantage of free festival shuttles from Chapel Hill Transit connecting key locations throughout Carrboro.
🅿️ Free parking: Carrboro has free public parking. Also, Carrboro Elementary School (400 Shelton St.) will serve festival-goers.
