Minor edit: We think they should have said "a good looking" highly trained Public Safety Telecommunicator answers. Otherwise, great information! 😜

Ever wonder what really happens after you hit "dial" in an emergency? 📞🚨

We all know to dial 911, but the journey of that call—from your pocket to a public safety dispatcher—is a marvel of modern telecommunications. 📲

Understanding this process helps us appreciate the intricate network that keeps us safe. Here’s a look at the key steps:

1️⃣ A call is initiated on your cellphone.
2️⃣ The signal reaches the nearest cell tower.
3️⃣ The tower’s core systems recognize the "911" emergency prefix.
4️⃣ The call is routed to a specialized data center.
5️⃣ The call is securely transported to the correct Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP).
6️⃣ A highly trained Public Safety Telecommunicator answers.

This week, April 12-18, is National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week.

We would like to recognize and thank the dispatchers of the Carroll County Communications Center for the outstanding work they do every day.

Our dispatchers are the first first responders. They answer 911 calls, calm callers during some of the worst moments of their lives, coordinate law enforcement, fire, and EMS response, and help keep both the public and responders safe.

Over the years, the technology, systems, and expectations placed on dispatchers have continued to grow. Today's telecommunicators must manage radios, phones, CAD systems, mapping, text to 911, emergency alerts, law enforcement databases, weather information, and much more, all while making critical decisions under pressure.

Their professionalism, dedication, and ability to remain calm in difficult situations are essential to the safety of Carroll County every day.

Please join us in thanking our dispatchers for everything they do this week and throughout the year.
