“Many Black trans people are experiencing a time of heightened suffering as they are pushed further into the peripheral and unable to acquire their basic needs. Black trans people are simultaneously fighting racial discrimination, transphobia and trying to stay healthy during the pandemic. At this point, any kind of relief has an overdue welcoming.” Carter Brown, Founder and Executive Director of Black Transmen, Inc.

Happy Trans Day of Visibility to our Black Transwomen, Inc Sistahs!

Happy Trans Day of Visibility! What a refreshing day to celebrate the tenacity and resilience of trans and GNC people. The Black Trans Advocacy Coalition (BTAC) takes honor in its visibility to and for the community since 2011.

We celebrate those who have journeyed before us and among us in support of our mission and impact. We also acknowledge that too often our trans elders and trans brothers remain invisible within the movement. Also our GNC/non-binary are still challenged with visibility within the community.

Today, more so, we express our acknowledgement and appreciation of you and your continued perseverance for visibility. We extend gratitude to ALL trans and non-binary folks for your boldness to be yourselves. May your visibility continue to be a beacon that guides and nurtures a better human experience for all who witness your shine!

Much Love,
Carter Brown & Espy Yé YO Brown

Could you use $50? Are you a transwoman in the Dallas area? Gotta few minutes? UT Southwestern is conducting a survey of transgender women in the Dallas area. Participants will be paid $50 in cash for their time – interviews usually take 45 minutes – 1 hour. The purpose of this survey is to give transgender women a voice and to help inform practices and policies around working with the transgender community. The survey asks questions around experiences in health care settings, stigma, discrimination, experiences of violence, experiences of gender-affirming care, and many other topics. The results from this survey will inform how transgender women are (or are not) best served in the Dallas community and where there are gaps in resources. If interested in participating in the survey, please contact Brandon Corpus at [email protected] or Chris Walker at [email protected]

Hello everyone, No one here knows me so allow me to introduce myself. I am Sophia Olaitan Oyetunbi, I'm 60 years old and I have been living the trans experience since 2013. Ok, so that much you may know from my profile. What you do not know is that I not only live my life in the trans experience and am ecstatic about that, but I also am a Conservative, that's right, you read me correctly, I am a Conservative. Throughout my life as an African American I have been discriminated against throughout my life on multiple occasions just for the color of my skin. I told myself that no matter what, I would never find myself discriminating against another human for who they are. Yet, here I am, living the trans experience and being discriminated against by my own, you read it correctly, other people living their trans experience belonging to this organization, Black Trans Advocacy rejected me for political reasons. I wanted to join this organization as a lifetime member; believing that of all people who are living the trans experience, they would be the last person who would want to discriminate against anyone, let alone one of their own; thinking that their tent would be big enough for all who would want to join, but alas it was not to be. How is this possible, are we doing so well getting America to accept us that we can afford to disown another person living the trans experience? Are we so narrow-minded that we don't feel we need allies from the other side of the political spectrum? Let me clue my trans experience brothers and sisters onto something of which they all may be unaware; right now as I opine this message we are looked at by Republicans and Conservatives as weird, perverted, on our way to hell in a handbasket, ad nauseam. Democrats and Liberals are looked at by those same Republicans and Conservatives as a party who believes in nothing but gaining and holding onto to power, by any means necessary. As long as we have dynamics such as the aforementioned we will forever have to fight an uphill battle getting legislatures to rule in our favor from both sides of the political aisle. I hope to one day be able to sit before the Senate for the world to see that people who live the trans experience aren't just liberals but conservatives as well, promoting the concept that all humans deserve the right to live their lives without the laws of this country prohibiting such activity. However, how do I do this when my own people living the trans experience reject me as one of their own. What do you think the world will say when they see a Conservative person living the trans experience come face to face with Conservative and Republican Senators in a senate hearing who is not even accepted by other people living the trans experience? Food for thought!!!
