Summer gardening season is upon on and it is time to start strategizing on how to preserve your summer fruits and veggies. Preserving food by canning is a fun and easy way to enjoy your harvest through the fall and winter. But it is important to have your pressure canner tested. The USDA recommends pressure canner gauges be tested annually for accuracy, as they can become inaccurate over time. Inaccurate gauges can lead to under or over processing which can potentially cause food safety issues. The OSU Extension office in Carrollton will be offering a come-and-go pressure canner testing session on June 9 from 5:30pm to 7pm. Bring your canner lid with gauge and seal to have it tested and inspected, and to ask you canning questions. This program is free to the public. If you cannot attend this session, canners can always be dropped off at the Extension office for testing, and you will be notified when it is ready for pick-up.

“Make hay while the sun shines”. How many times have you heard that said throughout the years? In 2025 making dry hay was difficult at best. So far in 2026, making quality forage continues to be a struggle given warm and wet weather. Forage analysis results from last year’s testing program highlighted the lack of nutrients in most of the first cutting hay that was submitted. Those 2025 results further demonstrated the value of forage testing during the summer in order to develop a plan for supplementation if needed.
Again in 2026, OSU Extension is offering a forage testing program with the goal of providing timely education for winter supplementation.

Dry hay or baleage samples can be submitted to OSU Extension office in Carroll County by July 30, 2026. The first sample analysis will cost $15, with subsequent samples costing $20. Near Infrared (NIR) Analysis will be completed. Producers will get values for Dry Matter Content, Total Digestible Nutrients, Crude Protein, ADF, NDF, Ash, Fat, C, P, K.

Contact the Carroll County office for further information and to check out the forage sampling probe.
