🌱✨Sowing Seeds for Freedom✨🌱

On Friday, June 19th, the Carroll County Conservation District was honored to partner with the Port William Historical Society and the Carroll County Cooperative Extension Service for a truly special community celebration at the Historic Masterson House.

This family-friendly field day brought historic agriculture to life in the most beautiful way. James and Elizabeth Guthrie of Arrow G ranch, arrived with their magnificent Percheron draft horses, Jim and Bill, giving attendees a firsthand look at horse-drawn ploughing, just as the Mastersons themselves would have worked this very ground. All ages stepped up to have a turn at the handles, and the smiles said it all.

The freshly turned earth held a few surprises of its own. The kids discovered all kinds of treasures tucked into the soil. A couple of notable items were rocks that looked remarkably like potatoes and glittering amber glass from an old medicine bottle. Every handful of dirt was an adventure.

If that wasn't enough, a pair of bald eagles paid us not one, but two visits, soaring gracefully over the grounds as if they knew exactly what day it was. 🦅🦅
In honor of our nation’s 250th birthday, we paused between the ploughing and the planting to share a celebratory cake together as a community. 🎂🇺🇸

After witnessing the majesty of Jim and Bill, standing a breathtaking 18.2 hands high, attendees rolled up their sleeves and planted the Masterson House garden with heirloom vegetables, herbs, and flowers, We cannot wait to watch this garden grow throughout the season as a living piece of history, tended by community hands.

A heartfelt thank you to Isaac DeSouza, Carroll County ANR Agent, Becky Caudill and Stephanie Nelson of Port William Historical Society, and the Guthrie family for their vision and partnership in making this day possible.

Events like this remind us why we do what we do. 💚 Carroll County, you never disappoint.

🪏 Volunteers are always welcome to w**d and water throughout the growing season. Interested parties can contact PWHS for more information.
