Members of the Nevada National Guard,

I wanted to relay to you that the family of SPC Graciela Gomez — who was killed in a tragic shooting last weekend — will hold a funeral service 0930 Saturday, Nov. 6, in Las Vegas at the Crossing Church, 7950 W. Windmill Lane. A procession will follow with military honors and burial at Davis Funeral Home, 6200 S. Eastern Avenue.

SPC Gomez, 22, was a member of the Las Vegas-based 17th Sustainment Brigade, Headquarters, Nevada Army National Guard. According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, SPC Gomez was shot and killed early Sunday morning while attending a house party in east Las Vegas. Police say there is no reason to believe SPC Gomez was targeted in the shooting. Police are still investigating and looking for five men who officers say randomly fired several rounds at the house. We are extremely saddened at the news of this tragic death.

SPC Gomez, a graduate of Las Vegas High and active member in the community, was an exceptional Soldier with a positive attitude and steadfast work ethic. Additionally, it's worth noting that she most recently answered the call and displayed great dedication and extraordinary service to her community over the course of the past year while working on the COVID-19 Task Force in Las Vegas helping our state get through the pandemic.

There is a GoFundMe account created for the family: https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-for-gracielas-funeral-expenses?utm_campaign=p_cp+share-sheet&utm_medium=copy_link_all&utm_source=customer

As was also mentioned in a previous Nevada National Guard statement earlier this week, her death comes days after we received news of another 22-year-old Nevada National Guard Soldier, 2LT Nicollo Murillo, who died unexpectedly Oct. 22 while at a training in Virginia. 2LT Murillo was a distinguished military graduate in the University of Nevada, Reno ROTC program before going off to training in Virginia. A funeral service for 2LT Murillo will be held 1300 Friday in Reno at the Mountain View Mortuary, 425 Stoker Avenue.

Both these Soldiers were rising stars in our organization who were well liked among their peers and our Nevada National Guard family. This undoubtedly affects all who served alongside both 2LT Murillo and SPC Gomez. The Nevada National Guard provides support and assistance to all our members through our chaplain corps, directors of psychological health and military and family program staff. We encourage all members struggling through loss or for any other reason to reach out and seek assistance.

A list of Nevada Guard support contacts is available on our website, https://nvng.nv.gov under “Military Support and Resiliency.”

This has been a trying couple weeks for the Nevada National Guard. I can't thank you all enough for your service and dedication to the Great State of Nevada and the United States of America.

Officer Hartfield joined the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department in 2002, after a 16-year Army career that included a year-long deployment in Iraq with the 82nd Airborne Division in 2003. After leaving the military and joining the LVMPD, he continued to serve as a sergeant first class in the Nevada Army National Guard, assigned to the 100th Quartermaster Company. In his off time, Hartfield was a youth football coach for the Henderson Cowboys. Somehow, among these numerous activities, Officer Hartfield also authored a book about his career experiences, Memoirs of a Public Servant.

Officer Hartfield was off duty and attending the Route 91 Festival with his wife on October 1, 2017, when shooting broke out. He did not hesitate. His military and police experience kicked in, and he immediately took action — assessing the area, trying to locate the shooter and escorting people to safety. While he saved many lives that night, he lost his own in the process.

A dedicated family man, Officer Hartfield was survived by his wife, Veronica; son, Ayzayah; and daughter, Savannah.
