The hills of Carson City were alive with the sound of sheep (in May)!

Carson City's targeted grazing initiative has been going on for the past twenty years. The city adopted this type of fuels reduction after the Waterfall Fire (July 14, 2004).

We interviewed Mareena Lovejoy, senior natural resource specialist with Carson City Parks, Recreation & Open Space Department, about the importance of this project and how it helps protect Carson City from catastrophic wildfires.

Carson City's targeted sheep grazing is funded in part by the United States Forest Service, through the Wildfire Crisis Strategy-Good Neighbor Agreement funds.

Drill time!

Today, Sierra Front Wildfire Cooperators -- an interagency group encompassing state, federal, tribal, and local wildland fire management agencies on the Nevada side of the Sierra Front -- came together for their annual drill. This mock wildfire scenario allows field staff, overhead, dispatch, and aviation to work together before being dispatched to incidents.

Training helps everyone "iron out" the kinks.

On Memorial Day, we honor those who died in service of ideals greater than themselves.

As President Lincoln said, they “gave the last full measure of devotion [… so] that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”

Camping this Memorial Day weekend?

Follow these simple tips to safe my extinguish your campfire: Drown, stir, drown, feel. Repeat as needed until it’s cold. To the touch.

If it’s too hot to touch, it’s too hot to leave.

Thanks to M. Van Zant and W. Ward for helping out with this one.

VIDEO DESCRIPTION: A man demonstrates how to put out a campfire using the drown, stir, drown, feel method.
