Carteret School Tax
The recent letter by my running companion and friend, Steve Pinchak, exposed Mayor Reiman, boro council, and the “old school boards“ bogus 5 year shared service agreement that stripped over $4,000,000 out of our school district into the municipal coffers. While outrageous and immoral, the shared service agreement is but one part of Team Reimans War on the Carteret school district. The Mayor and council, through tax agreements with corporations, builders, and developers, combined with Eminent Domain, have put together a systematic plan to deprive our schools of much needed tax revenue. Case in point. The hundreds of new apartments being constructed on Lower Roosevelt Ave, which will yield dozens of school age children, will produce no school taxes. Taxes are paid through an agreement with the boro and builder called “in lieu of taxes”, 15% of the gross income from the project is to be collected for property taxes, 10% to the Municipality, 5% to the county, 0% to the school district. Not hard to figure out who will paying for the additional kids entering our school system. Tax abatements for lower Roosevelt townhomes, Burger Express, and tax breaks for PC Richard. Properties taken by Eminent Domain that were producing school taxes now stand vacant yielding NO TAXES. Another strategy utilized by Team Reiman is the purchase/lease agreements. The Boro and Redevelopment Agency purchase properties that are paying municipal/county/and school taxes, and lease them out to corporate entities. Examples-RWJ Fitness Center, $35,000 lease payment to the Municipality-NO SCHOOL TAX - the new investor bank on Washington Ave. - $9,000 a month to the Boro - NO SCHOOL TAX . Team Reimans assault on our schools continue as the boro, under the guise of Eminent Domain, has purchased residential properties on Washington Ave and High St, kicking the homeowners to the street, the properties taken will soon produce NO SCHOOL TAXES. Past and present policies show a low level of importance the mayor and council have for our struggling school district. To paraphrase former President Bill Clinton “ It’s the schools stupid!”. Studies have shown a direct correlation between highly rated schools and property values ( Federal Reserve Bank of ST Louis May/June 2010 PP 185-204 ) stabilized taxes, and an increase in the town’s per capita income. $4,000.000 siphoned out of our school district, tax breaks for builders, developers, and corporate, and the continued abuse of Eminent Domain . Had enough? On November 5 vote Line A - Ken Freeman - Steve Pinchak for Boro Council. Let’s keep Team Reimans hand out of the cookie jar.
