Since 1996, we have been providing men, women, and families with temporary shelter and physical, emotional, and spiritual support. Our caring staff and volunteers assist the guests with developing and prioritizing goals for their return to the community as productive members.

“That place changed my life.” 💚

When you work at Good Neighbor and wear your name tag out in the community, something pretty incredible happens.

People stop you.

At the grocery store. At a restaurant. At an event. In the middle of an ordinary day.

And then come the stories...

“I stayed there years ago.”
“You helped my family.”
“I was at Good Neighbor when I had nowhere else to go.”
“That place changed my life.”

Countless stories. Countless lives changed.

And what we love most is that many of those stories are being told by people we may never recognize, because today they are simply our neighbors. Working. Raising families. Building lives. Giving back. Moving forward.

That’s the part of this work you can’t always capture in a statistic.

For 30 years, this community has helped create a place where someone can walk through the doors during one of the hardest chapters of their life and begin writing a different one.

💚 TEAM SPOTLIGHT: Meet Greg Thurkins!

If you’ve spent much time around Good Neighbor, chances are you’ve seen Greg somewhere in the middle of making things happen.

As our Director of Operations, Greg helps keep the many moving pieces of Good Neighbor moving — but ask him what matters most, and you’ll quickly realize his work is about far more than operations.

It’s about people.

Greg believes deeply in the resilience of the human spirit and in creating an environment where people walking through some of the hardest moments of their lives are met with hope, accountability, encouragement and love.

And around here, that matters.

Because the work of helping someone move toward stability happens in the big moments AND in a thousand seemingly small ones — and Greg is usually somewhere behind the scenes making sure those moments can happen.

His approach to each day might say it best:

Ask the Lord what we’re supposed to do today. Then go do it.

Oh, and if you’re wondering what kind of person willingly chooses to be both a Georgia Tech AND Buffalo Bills fan... 😂

Apparently, Greg has always had a heart for the long shot.

And maybe that makes him exactly the right person for this work. 💚

👋 Okay, this introduction is LONG overdue...

Help us officially welcome Mary Davis, our Director of Development, to the Good Neighbor team! 💚

Mary joined us about two months ago, and while she may not exactly be new anymore, we couldn’t start our new Team Spotlight series without properly introducing her to our community!

As Director of Development, Mary gets to do what she loves most: build relationships, connect people to purpose, and help our community discover how we can do more when we do it together.

You’ll see her out in the community, connecting with donors, businesses, churches and organizations, sharing the story of Good Neighbor and finding new ways for people to be part of the work happening here.

We are so excited to see what God has in store for this next chapter of Good Neighbor and grateful to have Mary helping us tell the story along the way.

Who’s in your corner when life gets hard?

We talk a lot about being strong enough to change our circumstances. But sometimes strength looks like realizing we were never meant to do it alone.

In this week’s Hey Neighbor, we’re talking about the power of having a support system — people who encourage you, hold you accountable, believe in you, and keep showing up when the road gets hard.

Because sometimes the difference between giving up and taking the next step is simply knowing someone is in your corner.

Is everyone ready for a Feel-Good Friday moment??

Ms. Ethel is a sweet guest at Good Neighbor. She has worked a full-time job and completed our 12-week program successfully, and because of that hard work, is moving in to her new apartment this weekend! Despite her savings from her time at the shelter, she was still anxious about the up-front costs with moving and wanted to still have a safety net when she left.

While she was sharing these concerns with a staff member, a considerate member of the community overheard the conversation while bringing in some donations. He felt led to give her exactly what she needed financially (and more) to move in- a true blessing! Because of his generosity and response to a call on his heart to care for others, Ms. Ethel’s life is changed.

These are the impactful stories that happen every day when a community shows up to help its own.

What if the community we imagine is something we have to build together?

It’s easy to look around and see the things we wish were different.

But what if instead of waiting for someone else to create the community we want, we decided to help create it ourselves?

Individually, we can make a difference.

25,041 clean days. 456 graduates. And behind every number is a story. ❤️ Longer post but worth the read!

A few days ago, our Good Neighbor team had the privilege of attending the 72nd Graduation Ceremony of the Cherokee Circuit Drug Court.

I knew it would be meaningful. I don’t think I was prepared for just how moving it would be.

We listened as graduates shared their testimonies — stories of where they had been, what they had overcome, and how their lives and families have changed.

And then I looked at the numbers.

Since the program began in 2008:

➡️ 778 people have entered the program
🎓 456 have graduated
📚 62 have earned a GED or degree
🙌 Current participants represent 25,041 clean days
💰 And from 2008–2025, the program reports nearly $13.9 MILLION in estimated jail-cost savings between Bartow and Gordon Counties.

Those are incredible statistics.

But sitting in that courtroom, you realize they are so much more than statistics.

25,041 clean days are 25,041 individual decisions.

456 graduates are 456 people who kept going when quitting would have been easier.

And every person who walked across that room represents lives beyond their own — children, spouses, parents, employers, friends and an entire community impacted by their success.

Drug Court isn't an easy way out. The program requires a minimum of 18 months and includes treatment, random drug screens, weekly court, supervision, community service, employment or full-time education, curfews, meetings and more.

It is accountability AND opportunity.

What an incredible reminder of what can happen when a community doesn't simply give up on people, but creates a path for them to do the hard work of changing their lives.

Congratulations to the graduates — and thank you to the judges, Drug Court team, families, supporters and community partners who continue to show up alongside them.

This is what being a Good Neighbor looks like. ❤️
