Veterans make sure you are managing your dependents on your VA award

It is the veterans responsibility to notify VA of any changes in dependents.

Life changes and if your dependents change you must notify VA. If VA is not notified you will have an overpayment debt.

VA must confirm the status of your dependents every 8 years by mailing a 21-0538. If the form is not returned by the deadline VA will remove your dependent back to the last time they were verified and you could incur a debt with VA.

A child CANNOT receive an education benefit and be on the veterans award as a dependent at the same time.

We’re pleased to share that the Children of Wartime Veterans Scholarship application portal is now open for Fall 2026.

The portal will remain open through June 8, 2026, so that awards can be announced before classes begin in August.

Apply here: https://scholarships.milvets.nc.gov

We know this shorter timeframe may be challenging, and we appreciate the patience and understanding of our veteran families. As always, we are grateful for the service and sacrifice of our veterans and their families.
