Name and Date of Birth Verification

Voters are required to provide either their drivers license number or the last for their social security number. The name and date of birth on a voters registration must match their Drivers License and Social Security Card.

This assures that when we run the voters drivers license and the last four of their social security number, they will validate.

If the number does not validate the voter may run into longer wait times when voting so that we can collect and verify this information.

Did You Know?

Photo ID is Required in order to vote.

Voters will be asked to show photo ID when voting in North Carolina. Most voters will simply show their driver’s license, but there are many other acceptable photo IDs.

If a voter cannot show an acceptable photo ID when voting in person, they can still vote by filling out an ID Exception Form. If absentee-by-mail voters are unable to include a copy of their photo ID with their ballot envelope, they can also fill out an ID Exception Form to return with their ballot.

All county offices offer free voter photo IDs to registered voters.

Did You Know?

A voter receives a provisional ballot when questions arise about:
- The voter’s qualification to vote,
- The voter’s eligibility to vote in a given election, or
- The voter’s eligibility to vote a specific ballot style.

A provisional ballot also is used when a voter does not or cannot present photo ID when voting in person.

Election officials hold provisional ballots aside as they conduct research about the voter’s eligibility. Based on the research, county board of elections members make final determinations about voter eligibility. Election results are not finalized until all provisional ballots that are eligible are counted.
