Parton, who passed away yesterday at the age of 80, was not only a singer, songwriter and movie star, she was the founder of Imagination Library; thanks to her, Imagination Library and their partner organizations, more than 304 million books have been given to children up to age five since 1995. Some of these titles are, or have previously been, included on our recommended reads list as part of Patriotism Through Literacy, our Youth Activities initiative.

There is some confusion about which scholarships and contests "belong" to which organization, so we've created this quick, handy guide to help keep it all straight!

VFW Post 7383 and Auxiliary held a back to school supply drive. We collected 50 backpacks and supplies. Each backpack had a Buddy Poppy wrapped around the zipper pull. In the front pocket we added a Pledge of Allegiance pencil and card. Members of US Veterans Corp picked up the supplies to be delivered to Ft. Bragg and Cherry Point Schools.

DID YOU KNOW…
Today is Purple Heart Day.

The Purple Heart was created by General George Washington, first President of the United States, in 1782, then called a Badge of Merit. It was awarded to soldiers who performed heroic and notable actions; Washington himself awarded only three.

The Badge of Merit became the Purple Heart in 1932, given to honor those wounded in combat and for commendable actions, and in 1944, it was decided it would be specifically awarded to those who were wounded or killed in action.

Purple Heart Day has been observed since 2014. It is a day to honor, remember and show gratitude for those who have gone above and beyond in the line of duty, which the members of the VFW Auxiliary do today and every day.
