Did you know? Bull City YouthBuild is a leadership development program for youth who wish to obtain their GED, participate in financial literacy and workforce readiness training and obtain employment. We enroll students from Durham who have officially dropped out of school. Students work to earn their high school equivalency while getting workforce readiness training and employment placement assistance.

As of April 1, 2025, 10 students have passed the Essential Ed tests in at least 1 subject area (Language, Reading, Math, Social Studies, or Science), and 9 students have passed the practice test for at least one subject area of the GED (English Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, or Science). These students are in the process of getting vouchers from Durham Tech to take (and hopefully pass!) the GED.

BCYB students recently had the opportunity to learn about financial literacy from Mr. William Fisher, a representative of Coastal Credit Union. They gained an understanding of debt and the key differences between a bank and a credit union. This valuable information will help them make informed financial decisions in their lives. The students were highly engaged and are eagerly looking forward to Mr. Fisher’s return to complete the financial literacy simulation.

Thanks for spending time with BCYB, Mr. Fisher!

Bull City YouthBuild on the road! Students recently took a field trip to the Durham County Main Library where they utilized the library catalog and books to research prominent people in the Civil Rights movements. They are now using this research to write short biographical essays. Go team!

As a social activist, he has organized around issues ranging from prison reform to nuclear nonproliferation, but he hopes that working with TLC will involve him directly in the community he cares for.
