Bonneville Dam is part of a river system that supports navigation, hydropower, and flood risk management for our region. And from April to September every year, the spillway gates remain open for the safe downstream passage of salmon smolts. When the sun hits the mist just right, this massive structure becomes a work of art, adding to the spectacle that is the Columbia River.

Calling all school groups!

Are you a teacher, scout leader, or homeschool organization who's interested in bringing your students to Bonneville to witness the spring salmon migration?

We are currently seeking interested groups!! Tours generally run 90 minutes and give students the opportunity to learn about salmon migration and lifecycle while viewing them in our underwater windows. Tour participants also get to view our generators inside the powerhouse, which is an excellent opportunity to learn about hydropower and energy generation.

We have two visitor centers for you to choose from; The Bradford Island Visitor Center, located in Oregon at I-84 exit 40, and the Washington Shore Visitor Center, located on SR-14. Each destination offers a unique experience. Bradford Island is located next to our historic first powerhouse, offering a historical perspective of the dam’s construction during the Great Depression. You can also meet Herman, the 11-foot-long white sturgeon, who can be found at the Bonneville Fish Hatchery. The Washington Shore, on the other hand, offers tours into Powerhouse Two, where you can walk on two generators and view the turbine pit.

Both locations offer underwater fish viewing.

To book a tour at Bonneville, contact us at 541-374-8820,

This is not the greatest art in the world.
This is just a tribute (to Bonneville Dam).

Happy World Art Day!

There are some technical inaccuracies in this particular work of art that our engineers weren’t stoked on, but we felt this was a good artistic salute to the first federal dam on the Columbia and Snake rivers.

Located about 40 minutes east of Portland, Bonneville Dam was completed in 1938 to improve navigation on Columbia River and provide hydropower to the Pacific Northwest.

Today, the dam—one of the Corps of Engineers’ only National Historic Landmarks—generates enough electricity to power approximately 900,000 homes.

Bonneville is a critical part of a water resource management system that includes power generation, navigation, water quality improvement, fish and wildlife habitat (including fish passage), and recreation along the Columbia River.

It's also the inspiration for our (attempts at) artistic expression from time to time.
