COMMUNITY REMINDER ABOUT CASCADE ANIMAL ORDINANCES
Cascade Police have recently responded to multiple calls about dogs escaping fenced yards, defeating electronic fences, and attacking/biting people and other dogs. When responding to these calls, we've learned of prior incidents where attacks by the same animal had gone unreported. This limits our ability to properly address future incidents. Please share this, spread the word, and help keep our community safe.
These descriptions are only summaries……please research the ordinance section for complete content and language.
4-1-1 “AT LARGE” – if an animal is off the premises of the owner, it must be under the control of a competent person. There is no “leash law” in Cascade, but if you’re not using a leash, your dog must be “at heel” and obedient to commands. It is your responsibility to ensure that your dog can’t jump the fence, break the chain, or “ride the lighting” well enough to defeat their electronic collar when you aren’t looking.
4-1-9 “KEEPING A VICIOUS ANIMAL” –an animal that has bitten or attacked a person without provocation, or when an animal has a propensity to attack or bite people or animals and the owner knows it or at least should know it. Not every bite means your dog is vicious. Dogs are dogs and each situation is different. We’ll show up, ask some questions, and determine if a bite was provoked or not. This is a good thing. If your dog bites someone snooping around your property at night with a crowbar and a flashlight, we’ll probably give your dog a treat and then arrest the person for trespassing and possession of burglar’s tools.
4-1-14 “OWNER’S DUTY” – you are required by law to report an animal bite to a local health or law enforcement official. If you own the dog that bit someone, own the leg that was bitten, or saw it happen from across the street, you are legally required to report it.
