Emergency managers bring people together before disasters happen. They coordinate with fire departments, law enforcement, EMS, public health, public works, schools, hospitals, utilities, volunteer organizations, faith-based groups, private businesses, and many others to develop plans, share information, and solve problems.

These partnerships don't begin with 911 calls or when the sirens sound. They are built over months and years through meetings, training, exercises, and collaboration.

When emergencies occur, communities don't have time to exchange business cards. The relationships already need to exist.

𝗧𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆'𝘀 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲: Think about one organization in your community that contributes to emergency preparedness. It may not wear a uniform, but it plays an important role in keeping your community safe.

A threat for strong to severe thunderstorms is in place this afternoon and evening, primarily in northern Missouri and Illinois. The main hazards are expected to be damaging winds and a few tornadoes, with thunderstorm development dependent on the evolution of storms earlier this morning. Have multiple warning sources and stay updated to the forecast at weather.gov.

The Extreme Heat Warning and Heat Advisory were extended until Thursday evening, despite a chance for storms today that may mitigate heat. Temperatures stay fairly hot, and dangerous heat index values are now forecast to linger through the weekend. Stay hydrated and watch for heat illness!
