Come and see our new traveling exhibit, "Voices and Votes: Democracy in America," from the Smithsonian Institution!

This exhibit explores the history of American self-governance from revolution and suffrage, to civil rights and casting ballots, everyone in every community is part of this ever-evolving story -- the story of democracy in America.

The exhibit will be on display through October 3, 2026.

Voices and Votes is part of Museum on Main Street, a collaboration between the Smithsonian and the Wyoming State Museum.

Join us Friday, July 31 at 2pm for this wonderful performance.

We are in our fourteenth year of taking audiences through America’s 250 years of history in the documentary concert Romancing the West and it has been such a honor to tell the stories of so many who came before us and loved this land in photographs, rare film and live original music and poetry. As we go through the trials, tribulations and triumphs of the people of the West and celebrate their diverse cultures, lives and legacies we have both mourned and grieved the painful and shameful episodes in our Countries history and celebrated the hard fought victories we have accomplished as a tapestry of multiple cultures who continue in a quest to live up to the ideals in our beautiful Declaration of Independence.

In this polarized political climate, we can neither gloss over the injustices nor ignore the fact that people of all races stood together to right injustice both dying on the battlefield in the Civil War, making stands against segregation over decades and during the Civil rights movement and continuing on as we learn from this history and live up to our calling as a Country together. Moved North from Kentucky to fight for the North in the Civil War and named his son Ulysses Grant after General Grant and my great great grandfather fought and was injured in the Civil War fighting to end the scourge of slavery. My Irish tenor Grandfather Ronnie Mansfield was so proud to share the bill opening day of Radio City Music Hall with with the Tuskegee Choir along with so many musicians who fought to end the segregation in audiences as the tide was turning in the 1930’s. We share the stories of the Chinese Miners, and the Irish, Swedish and other European Immigrants and of course the Native American tribes who suffered so much injustice in the saga of Western Expansionism. We also look at how these cultures are preserving and honoring their history and traditions today and how we are overcoming together.
Remembrance is a sacred and cleansing act that brings healing as we allow both the good and the painful episodes to teach and inform us, warn and inspire us, and foster within us understanding and love for our fellow Americans.

The National Historic Trails Interpretive Center in Casper is back open.

The National Historic Trails Interpretive Center is reopening next week! Doors open on July 28 and the Center will return to regular hours Tues.–Sat., 9:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m. MST. The team can’t wait to welcome visitors back and share the stories of the people behind the journeys that shaped the American West. And huge shoutout to Fort Caspar Museum for hosting summer programs while the Center got spruced up!

Historian, author, and licensed battlefield guide Wayne Motts will present an engaging examination of the historical connections between the Civil War’s pivotal 1863 Battle of Gettysburg in Pennsylvania and the significant frontier military posts of Fort Caspar and Fort Laramie along Wyoming’s North Platte River.

Through selected stories and historical context, this program will explore the ways in which individuals, events, and military service linked the Gettysburg campaign to the broader history of the American West, both before and after the four-year conflict that profoundly shaped the nation.

Wayne E. Motts is one of the nation’s most respected Civil War historians, known for his dynamic storytelling and deep expertise in battlefield interpretation. Born and raised in central Ohio, Wayne earned his B.A. in military history from The Ohio State University and later completed his M.A. in American History at Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania. Wayne began guiding tours at Gettysburg National Military Park in 1988. He was one of the youngest people in the history of the park to complete the licensing process. He is the author of Trust in God and Fear Nothing: Lewis A. Armistead, CSA (1994) and Pickett’s Charge at Gettysburg (2015, with James Hessler). Wayne’s scholarship has been featured in numerous publications and documentaries, including work on the History Channel, TNT, A & E, and C-Span. He is a frequent speaker at Civil War Round Tables and other historical organizations across the country. Wayne has held leadership roles at several prestigious institutions, including the Adams County Historical Society (Now Gettysburg History) and the Gettysburg Foundation which operates the National Park Service Visitor’s Center at Gettysburg. He currently serves as CEO of the National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He resides near the Gettysburg Battlefield.

A fried chicken lunch will be provided at noon with the lecture to follow soon after.

The location is different than usual. This lunch & learn will not be at Fort Casper, but will be held at the Natrona County Collective Trust at 421 S. Center Street, Casper, WY 82601.

It has been a busy start to July here at Fort Casper. First a big shout out to the guys from our Parks Department for coming over with the big lift and untangling the rope on the flag pole. The flag was flying for the 4th of July.

Work is commencing on the replacement of the sill logs on the stable, working is being done on the back of the building, so not visible in the photo.

The local veterans organizations held a Free BBQ on July 4th and lots of people showed up. The Wyoming Veterans Museum brought their WWII fire trunk by for the fun.

And everybody had a great time at the Central Wyoming Fair & Rodeo Parade. A big thank you to Morris Carter for lending his wagon and driving it. Con Trumbull, Gena Jensen City Council Ward 1 and Brett Hobza went along for the ride.
