“Why the Trails Center Will Temporarily Close-and How You Can Help Us Reopen Stronger”
The National Historic Trails Interpretive Center will temporarily close for 45 days beginning 15 days from the date we received official notice from the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). This closure is required so the Foundation can fully clean, repair, and restore the exhibits we own, as outlined in the BLM’s May 28, 2026 letter to us. The letter states that “all exhibits owned by the NHTCF are to be fully cleaned and repaired to full functioning condition” and that the Center must close to ensure public safety during this work.
We know the timing is difficult. This is tourism season. This is America’s 250th anniversary year. And we love welcoming visitors just as much as you do.
But here’s the truth:
For the past 3.5 years, the Foundation has been unable to fundraise or accept donations inside the building due to the absence of a formal partnership agreement. During that time, our exhibits have aged, technology has become obsolete, and several experiences, including the beloved Mormon handcart ride, now require major repairs.
The good news is that the BLM has now begun to move forward with the new partnership agreement. Once signed, we can finally resume accepting donations in the center, fundraising, and begin rebuilding the visitor experience our community deserves.
This closure is our chance to restore, repair, and modernize technology for the exhibits that make the Trails Center so special.
How You Can Help Right Now---
We must raise $35,000 to replace failing projectors, repair the Mormon Handcart Interactive Ride, and update outdated technology.
And for those who step forward in a meaningful way:
**Gifts of $2,500 or more, your name will be permanently engraved on our Rock Wall! The higher the gift, the larger the font.**
Your support today ensures that when we reopen, we reopen stronger, safer, and ready for the next generation of trail storytellers.
Thank you for standing with us during this transition.
Thank you for believing in the power of history.
And thank you for helping us keep these stories alive.
