RIP LHP

We are saddened to announce the passing of Leigh (LHP) Perkins.

An outdoorsman, conservationist, businessman, and great-grandfather, Leigh purchased Orvis in 1965 and transformed it into one of the most respected, family-owned sporting, apparel, and dog brands in the world. Leigh fished and hunted more than 250 days a year into his 90’s, always leaving the places he loved better for the next generation.

Trout Unlimited congratulates Deb Haaland on her history-making confirmation as Secretary of the U.S. Department of the Interior. She is the first Native American and only third woman to hold the post.

“For Trout Unlimited members across the country, there are few roles as important as Secretary of the Interior for ensuring responsible stewardship of public lands and sustaining our outdoor traditions,” said Chris Wood, president and CEO of Trout Unlimited. “TU has long-standing partnerships with the Department to conserve and restore public lands and trout and salmon fisheries, and we look forward to building on these successes under Secretary Haaland’s leadership.”

Haaland will oversee the management and conservation of the vast majority of America’s public lands and natural resources, including hundreds of millions of acres of national parks, wildlife refuges, and lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management. In addition, Interior’s Bureau of Reclamation manages water infrastructure and distribution networks throughout the West.

At the same time, Interior plays an outsize role in Native American affairs, and Haaland’s appointment puts at the helm a Secretary who understands Native cultures and the need to honor commitments the country has made to its Indigenous peoples.

“Under Haaland’s leadership,” Wood continued, “we know that our public lands and trust resources are in good hands.”

When big trout come to the surface to hammer large stoneflies, anglers can enjoy some of the most exciting dry-fly fishing of their lives. This is why some anglers will travel great distances to fish salmonfly or Skwala hatches. The problem is that . . .

Update: HB 141 -Transfer of federal lands will NOT move forward for consideration this legislative session. Thank you to those of you who told your legislators that this was not a worthwhile discussion or endeavor.
************************************************
Our state legislators are considering bills in Cheyenne right now.

Please call or email your House Rep today to ask them to
**vote NO on House Bill 141**

HB 141 ('Transfer of federal lands') demands that the federal govt transfer all public federal lands to the state of Wyoming by Dec. 2023. Transfer of federal land to the state would be bad news for outdoorspeople because state lands are not managed for multiple uses, they're managed for revenue-generation. State lands management does NOT prioritize public access, conservation work, or recreation (except those owned specifically by WY Game & Fish).

In 2016 the state funded a study to determine whether or not Wyoming would benefit from such a massive land transfer, and it found that the state would NOT be able to afford to manage all of those public lands. The state would likely have to sell some transferred public lands to the highest bidders in order to pay for management of the remaining land. Please ask your elected representatives to VOTE NO on HB 141 (Transfer of Federal Lands).

You can find out who your representatives are & how to contact them here, or ask for help in the comments below: https://wyoleg.gov/Legislators

Wyoming Fly Fishing Report: Grey Reef fishing is solid…ha! The fish are eating well but there is also ice starting a few miles down the river. The ice will halt your progress from Grey Reef to Lusby if you float. Plan on wade fishing and that is a good thing. Lots of great water available that is fishing really well with very little traffic. We do have private ramps that allow floating so if you opt to take advantage of our shoulder season fishing and/or lodging packages you will have that option.

Check www.northplatteflyfishing.com for details on reduced rate trips. You won’t sacrifice on high-quality fishing or very limited angling pressure but you might have to bundle up a bit. Miracle Mile is fishing well, however, the roads have been an issue with drifting. This week is on a warming trend so that might lead to improved access but also might tip the scale to muddy roads. Give the shop a call before heading that way. Leeches, scuds, and midges have been the name of the game and there won’t be much of a deviation until early April when the Baetis (blue-winged olives) start kicking around.

If you love to fish and recreate on the Wind/Big Horn River please make your voice heard! The deadline for comment has been extended until July 19th. This is not a “to drill or not to drill” oil development situation. It’s about doing the right thing. Here in Wyoming we rely on resource development to provide jobs and it is our main tax base. However, we cannot allow irresponsible practices to ruin our greatest natural assets. I ask the DEQ to require the oil companies to act responsibly and clean up the waste without risking an amazing fishery. It’s hard to believe that wastewater will intentionally be allowed into our clean waters. Is this the right thing to do? We all need to be held to the same standard, oil companies included. The rest of us have to dispose of our waste responsibly and it costs us money to do so. It’s the cost of doing business. Developers need to bear the same responsibility as the rest of us. You and I could keep more hard-earned money if we just dumped our used appliances and tires in the alley or onto public land. But that is not the right thing to do. Dumping waste into the water supply is not the right thing to do as well. It is important to note that Wyoming will receive the same economy-boosting tax base from the Moneta Divide Project regardless if they dispose of the waste properly or not. However, the people of Wyoming will bear future repercussions of irresponsible development. Think of your favorite fishing/hunting places. Would you ever want them taken away from you so someone else can make a little more money? If you have any children or grandchildren think of them and their future. This is one of the best fisheries in Wyoming. Please have your voice heard and comment to the DEQ by the July 19th deadline.
A non-fly fisherman acquaintance recently came into possession of a treasure trove of gear and he is seeking to sell it. Included is a Redington Purist rod a reel, 6 wt., 9 ft.; two Cliff's Bu**er Beast Jrs. full of dries, nymphs, streamers, etc.; a Fishpond vest, packed with other boxes of flies, gear and tippets and a small net; a Simms f***y pack also full of flies and gear; and other numerous items. He would like to sell the entire package to a single person. Only serious prospective buyers need reply. Here's one of the fly boxes to whet your appetite.
Enjoyed the meeting tonight. Thanks G Scott Novotny
