"Hey there! I'm Monica, I served at the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe Department of Resource Management office. One aspect of my job that I really enjoyed was working on design and media materials because it allowed me to showcase the environmental-related work being done here while also giving me the freedom to explore my creativity. My favorite overall project was designing a solar pollinator garden synergy sign; which were professionally printed on metal sheets and posted at each of our 6 synergy garden locations across the Reservation. They include the phrase "Gitigan Manidoohsag" which translates to "Little Spirit Garden". There is no Ojibwe word for 'pollinators' so 'little spirit' was chosen to emphasize the vital role of these tiny yet essential creatures in our ecosystem. My advice to incoming members is to connect with as many people as possible, both within and beyond your immediate circle. You never know who might hold valuable information that could be useful to you. Engaging with others outside of my department helped me determine where I wanted to go to grad school, what I wanted to study/research, and who I ultimately wanted to work with."
