Have you ever tasted a dish that connects you to history and culture? Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) white corn soup is a traditional soup that’s bigger than the ingredients it uses—simple on the surface but deeply connected to the land it comes from.

Recipes vary widely by Tribe, region, and family tradition, but white corn soup has been a cherished dish for generations of family meals, ceremonies, and community gatherings. It’s a two-day preparation process that uses traditional methods and includes few ingredients. Some recipes only require water, dried white corn, beans, pork or turkey, and hardwood ashes for hulling.

Try your hand at making traditional white corn soup using the recipe featured in the CDC’s Traditional Foods in Native America (found on page 35), a publication used by IHS and Tribal nutrition programs:https://www.cdc.gov/diabetes-ndwp/media/Part-I-Traditional-Foods-in-Native-America-April-21.pdf

If you're interested in preparing other recipes that are faithful to a particular tradition, cookbooks by Indigenous authors and organizations, like the Iroquois White Corn Project, offer more white corn recipes rooted in specific cultural practices and histories: https://www.ganondagan.org/white-corn-project

The Indian Health Service is working to increase access to maternal health care in Tribal communities and support families during and after pregnancy. The goal of the Maternal and Child Health program is to bring national resources into the Native community. It is also important that our initiatives and efforts lead with cultural safety and humility, to transform and ensure that the health system is led by the people it serves.

For many Tribes in Oklahoma, wild onions are more than a springtime tradition. They represent family, cultural knowledge, and a lasting connection to the land. Watch Mvskoke (Muscogee Creek) elder Carol Tiger as she shares the tradition of harvesting and preparing Tafvmpuce (wild onions), a cherished springtime food passed down through generations: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HXWHyLhroRY. (The recipe is also posted in the comments below.)

Often gathered from shaded woodlands and creek banks, wild onions are carefully harvested, cleaned, and prepared into a meal that brings families and communities together. Today, wild onion dinners continue to serve as beloved community gatherings and fundraisers across Oklahoma. Carol’s workshop, supported by the Native American Food Sovereignty Alliance’s 2025 Healing Meals Grant, helps preserve these treasured recipes and traditions by documenting them for future generations.
