Skywatch Bird Rescue

Skywatch Bird Rescue Birds receive medical care, food, safe
shelter and rehabilitation. Once they have recovered from their injuries, they are released back to the wild.

SkyWatch is a 501(c)3 nonprofit, all-volunteer, and donation-funded organization that rescues and provides sanctuary for injured, orphaned & misplaced wild, exotic & domestic birds in North Carolina.

“For a chance to soar once more!” Those that are non-releasable after recovery become permanent residents here at the rescue.

It’s hawk o’clock!

This week, we are receiving constant calls about hawks on the ground, as fledglings are taking their first true flights and needing to rest after. These three Cooper's Hawks, however, are still too young to be out of their nest, having lost their parents and their home in an instant when their tree was cut down. This family is now orphaned, and while we will take over from here, no one can raise them as well as their own parents.

We personally believe that it should be mandatory for contractors and landscaping companies to check for nests before being allowed to cut down, or to simply not allow large tree removal during the summer months. We have all of fall and winter to do so, but these birds only have a short season to raise their young. As with any native bird, hawks are federally-protected and no one is allowed to intentionally cut down their nest tree, which causes the misplacement, disruption, and death of families who are only trying to raise their young somewhere they thought was safe. These hawks are, sadly, far from the first babies to come in this season because their nest tree was cut down. We are currently raising songbirds, woodpeckers, corvids, and other raptors who were all needlessly orphaned this way.

We appreciate continued donations of supplies off our Amazon Wishlist: amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/31X78N0CIBKFM. Plant a tree for the birds! We are selling these beautiful mulberry trees as a fundraiser. Once established and mature (shown here behind one of our enclosures), these trees can produce thousands of berries each season. These berries are enjoyed by more than 50 bird species, and humans alike. Mulberries are fast growing, provide shade and shelter, and have a deep root system that can improve soil health.

Price ranges from $30-100 per tree, depending on the size and age. We will have these trees available for purchase during our visiting hours of 12-4pm each Saturday, at the rescue at 3600 Lynn Ave. in Castle Hayne. Let us know when you’re here if you’d like to take a look!

Happy ! 🦖 Some bird species, especially our ferocious Emus, are no doubt pretty prehistoric looking. But did you know that birds are literally dinosaurs? What we know as birds today are related to a subgroup of two-legged, meat-eating dinosaurs known as theropods (the most notable being the Tyrannosaurus rex).

Come closer, this fledgling Red-bellied Woodpecker wants to let you in on a little secret…

We are now having our popular yard sale fundraiser BIWEEKLY! This fundraiser provides us with extra financial support during baby season—our busiest intake time of the year—plus helps us pay for coinciding bills and expenses that aren’t covered by donations. Now, there’s twice the opportunity to support us through these sales!

We are still accepting gently-used item donations for our sale happening THIS Saturday, June 6th. We cannot use items that are broken or in need of repairs before being sold, and we are not currently in need of puzzles, books, board games, clothes/shoes, or furniture. We gladly welcome all other home décor and household items!

We will have a wide variety of home goods for sale—for a good cause! If you have items you’d like to contribute to our sale, donations can be dropped off anytime prior to the sale on the right side of our front porch at 3600 Lynn Ave. in Castle Hayne.

Earlier this week, drivers on Oleander Dr. in Wilmington had stopped to allow a family of Canada Geese to cross the road, when a truck passed through them, ran the red light, and hit and instantly killed the mother. Five drivers immediately jumped out of their cars to corral and rescue the terrified goslings and remove their deceased mother from the road. After a few days of care, we adopted her goslings out to a new family, who will continue their mother’s hard work and raise them as their own, and later integrate them into their flock. This was an incredible community effort, and a reminder that for every one person who seeks to hurt our wildlife, there are five others who will step up to help them!

Svenska, the driver who transported the family to us, was inspired by the incident and is kindly hosting a facial fundraiser for the rescue. For the next two weeks, 50% of proceeds on facials at her spa, Kind Aesthetics, at 5424 Oleander Dr. will go towards giving birds like these goslings a second chance. You can book yours, or buy a gift card for a friend’s facial, through her Instagram, , or by calling 980-401-1568.

We are now having our popular yard sale fundraiser TWICE a month! That’s twice the opportunity to come out to shop and support the rescue. We will now have a sale from 8am-1pm on the first AND third Saturday of each month. Save the dates, or check out our ‘Events’ tab on our page to receive reminders about our next sale!

This fundraiser provides us with extra financial support during baby season—our busiest intake time of the year—plus helps us pay for coinciding bills and expenses that aren’t covered by donations. Being able to now have these sales bi-weekly will allow us to cover even more.

These fledglings are saying thank you to everyone who has helped give them a second chance at returning to the wild. Many of the babies who came in earlier this season as hatchlings are now getting close to release. Birds grow up so fast!

We anticipate hundreds of babies still to come this season, and a great way that you can support them all is through our Amazon Wishlist at amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/31X78N0CIBKFM. This list is updated regularly to reflect our current needs and includes food and supplies that we use on a daily basis—giving you the opportunity to be directly involved in a baby bird’s care.

We are going through towels faster than we can wash them. We can use towels of all sizes, from hand towels to create nest bowls for baby birds to beach towels to line crates for larger patients. As long as the towels are gently-used with no holes or frays, we will gladly take them! Please note that we do not need any other linens at this time.

If you have any towels that you’re looking to donate, please keep us in mind! Donations can be dropped off anytime to the right of our front porch at 3600 Lynn Ave. in Castle Hayne.

Update: we have someone on the way. Thank you, Liza!

We need the public’s help in rescuing an injured Royal Tern on Masonboro Island. While we wish we could reach every bird in need, we do not have a boat and we cannot go out to the barrier islands to get birds. We are at the mercy of boaters being willing to capture them, with our guidance, and bring them to the mainland on theirs. If you can help, please leave us a message on our hotline at 1-855-40-RESCU (73728) and a volunteer will return your call to walk you through it. Thank you.

We have received multiple birds in the past few weeks who were found stuck to a sticky trap. Most of these birds die soon after due to well-intended, but incorrect steps taken to free them. There is much misinformation about how to handle these situations online, and unfortunately, many people do not call us until after fatal mistakes have been made. Below is our flyer that details the DOs and DON’Ts of rescuing a bird from one of these traps. If you find a bird (or another animal) trapped, follow these instructions or contact our hotline at 1-855-40-RESCU (73728) for advice. Please do not attempt to remove the animal yourself.

If you or someone you know still uses these cruel traps, please consider switching to a humane pest-control alternative. These traps harm much more than the “pests” they target, causing countless birds, small mammals, and reptiles & amphibians to slowly starve and die if not found.
