It’s hawk o’clock!
This week, we are receiving constant calls about hawks on the ground, as fledglings are taking their first true flights and needing to rest after. These three Cooper's Hawks, however, are still too young to be out of their nest, having lost their parents and their home in an instant when their tree was cut down. This family is now orphaned, and while we will take over from here, no one can raise them as well as their own parents.
We personally believe that it should be mandatory for contractors and landscaping companies to check for nests before being allowed to cut down, or to simply not allow large tree removal during the summer months. We have all of fall and winter to do so, but these birds only have a short season to raise their young. As with any native bird, hawks are federally-protected and no one is allowed to intentionally cut down their nest tree, which causes the misplacement, disruption, and death of families who are only trying to raise their young somewhere they thought was safe. These hawks are, sadly, far from the first babies to come in this season because their nest tree was cut down. We are currently raising songbirds, woodpeckers, corvids, and other raptors who were all needlessly orphaned this way.
