A recent fire in Castle Rock involving a lithium-ion battery from an e-scooter highlights how multiple components of Community Risk Reduction, or CRR, work together to help protect our community.

CRFD’s approach to serving the community includes CRR, a proactive strategy focused on reducing emergencies and improving safety through the 5 Es: education, engineering, enforcement, economic incentives and emergency response.

In this incident, emergency response and engineering played a key role in the positive outcome, as firefighters’ rapid response and the building’s fire sprinkler system working as designed helped contain the fire before it could spread and cause significantly greater damage.

As lithium-ion powered devices like e-scooters and e-bikes become more common, it is important for residents to understand the growing fire risks associated with damaged batteries, improper charging or unsafe storage. Residents are encouraged to follow manufacturer recommendations and practice safe charging habits to help prevent fires before they start. May is American Stroke Month, and Castle Rock Fire And Rescue Department wants to remind you that strokes can happen to anyone at any age. Recognizing the warning signs of stroke can help you take action in the moment, which may make the difference between a strong recovery and long-term disability, survival or death.

Just remember - B.E. F.A.S.T

B = Balance loss
Is there a sudden loss of balance or coordination?

E = Eye (Vision) changes
Ask the person if they are experiencing blurred vision, double vision or loss of sight in one or both eyes.

F = Face drooping
Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop, or is it numb?

A = Arm weakness
Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?

S = Speech difficulty
Is speech slurred or difficult to understand? Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence.

T = Time to call 911
If you have any of these symptoms or see someone else having them, call 911 immediately!

Ten members of Castle Rock Fire And Rescue Department just completed the final phase of the South Area Technical Rescue Academy with two days of trench rescue training.

This training focused on identifying hazards, stabilizing various types of trenches, and creating safe access for rescuers to reach and remove victims in the event of a collapse or injury within an unprotected excavation.

Thank you to our neighboring agencies South Metro Fire Rescue and West Metro Fire Rescue for making this an incredible multidisciplinary training opportunity to help keep our communities safer!

Despite the true Colorado weather, this past month Castle Rock Fire and Rescue, South Metro Fire Rescue, and West Metro Fire Rescue collaborated in the South Area Tech Rescue Academy. Firefighters initiated the process of becoming Technical Rescue Technicians, working on rope, trench, confined space, and structural collapse rescue. More than 20 firefighters from the three departments, 24 instructors, and all three agencies supported the commitment to accomplish this outstanding training opportunity. Great job to the instructors, coordinators, and students!

This week nationally we celebrate EMS Week and recognize the providers who answer the call every day across our community and throughout our neighboring agencies. We are proud to stand alongside the paramedics, EMTs, dispatchers, firefighters, nurses, physicians, law enforcement, and support personnel who work together to serve others during their most difficult moments.

The impact of the incidents they respond to never leaves them, and it takes a tremendous amount of resiliency to maintain a successful career. For that, we applaud them for staying in the work. It is impossible to measure the true impact in patient outcome, and rarely do the providers' actions be noticed in the patient outcome.

Improving Outcomes, Together is more than this year’s theme. It is a shared responsibility. It means supporting the people behind the patch with strong leadership, safe staffing, mental health resources, professional development, and the partnerships that make regional response possible.

To all EMS professionals in our agency and throughout our neighboring departments and healthcare systems, thank you for your service, your compassion, and your commitment to this profession and the communities we serve.

The countdown to community pools opening is now in the single digits! Castle Rock Fire And Rescue Department wants to make sure you have safety in mind as you think about that first splash in the pool.

While many community pools are staffed with well-trained lifeguards, lifeguards are not a substitute for adult supervision within your family or group.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, drowning is the leading cause of injury-related death for children ages 1 to 4. In many cases, there is no warning. Drowning can happen without splashing, yelling or calls for help, and in the short time it takes to reply to a text, grab a snack or apply sunscreen.

This summer, remember:
- Keep your eyes on swimming children at all times
- If a child is missing, look in the water first
- Swim lessons build life-saving skills and reduce drowning risk
- Designate a Water Watcher - an adult actively watching swimmers at all times with no distractions. Rotate the Water Watcher every 15 minutes.
