September 11, 2001… 23 years ago. There is not a single Explorer that was alive when 343 firefighters lost their lives on that tragic day. There is a motto that was born from that tragedy, “never forget.” The Explorers will not forget the sacrifices that were made that day. They did not experience the emotion of 9/11 in person, but they have learned about the heroic actions of first responders to save the lives of countless civilians. Today, members of Explorer Post 107 climbed the Castle Rock Incline 11 times, the equivalent of 110 stories and the height of the World Trade Center to honor the lives lost that day.

Extrication is the process of removing a vehicle from around a trapped patient. Tools used for extrication, often referred to as the “Jaws of Life” have cutting forces that exceed 120,000 pounds of pressure. That extreme amount of pressure is required to cut and rip steel and other structural components away from the patient in order to gain access to administer care, stabilize the victim, and remove them from the vehicle. Using these tools around a trapped victim demands a high level of skill, tact, and awareness to ensure no further harm is caused to the trapped occupant. What better way to develop that awareness than to take a tool that is capable of ripping vehicles apart and use it to pick up and carry an egg?!?!?

After explorers got a feel for how the tools operate (and sacrificing a few eggs in the process) explorers were able to train on extrication techniques with the crew at station 152.

The chili is sold out, the star is lit, the holiday season is officially upon us in Castle Rock.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by the firehouse and crunched on some nachos, downed a chili dog, and devoured a bowl of chili. The proceeds from this event go towards funding the Explorer Program. The star lighting ceremony is Explorer Post 107’s biggest fundraiser of the year. It wouldn’t be a success without everyone that stopped in.

Thank you again for your support and Happy Holidays from all of us!!!

Explorers assisted in the annual Touch-A-Truck event yesterday. CRPD started its annual Touch-A-Truck event in 2016, and it continues to grow every year. Explorers were there to show off a Castle Rock Fire and Rescue fire engine, give tours of the apparatus, and spray water with all that stopped by to see the fire engine.

Explorers trained on aerial operations, forcible entry, and discussed ventilation tactics during this weeks meeting. Explorer candidates (white t shirts) were also present to observe the training. Explorer candidates are in the observation stage of the onboarding process to become a fire explorer with CRFD. They have attended the open house and completed an oral board interview. Soon, finalists will be selected to participate in the 2023 Explorer Fire Academy and earn the title of Castle Rock Fire Explorer upon completion of the academy.

Here is one of our Explorer Lieutenants doing a Ride-A-Long with the crew at station 155. Station 155 houses the technical rescue team. The team was doing some edge transition and rope training which provided a great opportunity for the explorer to learn some rope skills. Once explorers graduate fire academy they are eligible to ride in castle rock fire engines, ladder trucks, and ambulances, train with crews, and respond to calls with castle rock firefighters.
