Bicentennial Tidbits

In 1791 a sea captain from Bristol Connecticut moved to Schodack on the shore of Castleton. He said later in his diary that he found the most beautiful sunsets here. His name was Isaac Esleeck. He built the federal style house at 1 Green Avenue. He bought the land along Green Avenue from the top of the hill to the river bank, which encompassed what was called the highway (later Green Avenue) by which farmers brought their produce down to ship to market.
In 1827 the Village was incorporated and John Stearns, who married Nancy, Isaac Esleeck's daughter, was one of the first Trustees of the Village.

A MESSAGE FROM THE VILLAGE DPW

STREET SWEEPING

I apologize for any confusion we have created with the directions for parking on Main Street during Friday Street Sweeping. To clarify:

On the odd numbered calendar days, park on the river side. On the even numbered calendar days, park on the non-river side.

Example for May:

5/1 ( an odd-numbered calendar day) park on the river-side so that the non river- side of Main Street can be swept.

5/8 ( an even-numbered calendar day) park on the non- river side so that the river-side of Main Street can be swept

5/15 ( an odd-numbered calendar day) park on the river-side so that the non river-side of Main Street can be swept

5/22 ( an even-numbered calendar day) park on the non-river side so that the river-side of Main Street can be swept

5/29 ( an odd-numbered calendar day) park on the river-side so that the non river-side of Main Street can be swept

The Village will issue a written warning for the first two weeks of May and will begin ticketing on Friday, May 15th.

VILLAGE RESIDENTS- PLEASE READ!🐻🐻🐻

We have had a couple of bear sightings in the Village over the past 24 hours.
One on Benedict Street ( that bear went into the woods) and one in the woods behind Green Avenue near the Castle Hill senior apartments. It is trash day and that is one way to attract them.

Please take a moment to read up on how to stay safe.
If you see a bear, contact the police. Then please contact the Village during business hours ( M-F 9-3) or through Messenger by sending a FB message to the Village. We will post information.

** We normally will send a robotext as well. The system appears to have been updated and we were unable to access it today but will straighten that out tomorrow.

ATTENTION VILLAGE RESIDENTS

UPDATED INFO: The original call came from 63 Benedict Street a bit before noon. The bear was not caught and went into the woods and has not been seen ( or reported) since. People in that neighborhood should be aware and perhaps careful when letting dogs out after dark ( bears will typically run from barking dogs unless feeling trapped) . If you see the bear, call the Schodack Police. We will give any updates we get.

There was a bear sighting on Benedict Street; the police have been notified, and they are sending someone over to deal with it. Please use common sense and don’t approach it.
