I think it should be stopped at the source. Not produced. We need to stop buying plastics. We need to stop producing plastics.

It might seem counterintuitive, but plastic as a material is not recyclable.

USPS Place Name Correction Request Submitted for Unincorporated Alameda County Communities!

¡El Condado de Alameda ha presentado al Servicio Postal de los Estados Unidos (USPS) una solicitud de correcciones de Nombres de Lugar para las comunidades no incorporadas del Condado de Alameda!

September 2024 News Update: On September 12, 2024, the Alameda County Community Development Agency submitted an official letter to the United States Postal Service (USPS) requesting changes to USPS Place Names (the "City, State" line in a mailing address) for unincorporated Alameda County communities of Ashland, Castro Valley, Cherryland, Fairview, Hayward Acres, and San Lorenzo. What would this change accomplish? USPS Place Names in unincorporated Alameda County do not match official community names and boundaries (click here to see a map of this mismatch). Due to USPS’s method for establishing mailing address Place Names, many unincorporated-area residents currently have USPS Place Names that are associated with the cities of Hayward and San Leandro. By implementing this change, the USPS would recognize the names and boundaries of the urban unincorporated communities as the official USPS mailing address Place Names. Correct USPS Place Names will improve community identity in the unincorporated communities and decrease confusion about municipal boundaries and services.

What would this change mean for you? If you live in the unincorporated communities of Ashland, Castro Valley, Cherryland, Fairview, Hayward Acres, or San Lorenzo, and your USPS Place Name does not already match the official name of your community, this change would mean that your community name would become your official USPS mailing address Place Name. ZIP Codes and mailing routes would not be impacted, and you could continue to use your old Place Name as an unofficial alternative if you prefer it.

When will the change be approved and implemented? The USPS is reviewing the County's request and they have not yet made their decision or set a timeline for implementation. In its letter to the USPS, the County recommended a phased approach to implementation to help minimize strain on USPS staff resources. A phased approach would also allow the County time to establish Hayward Acres as an official "Domestic Name" with the USGS Board on Geographic Names (BGN), as required by USPS. All other communities that are part of this request are already recognized by the BGN.

What's next? The County is waiting for a response from USPS, and we will continue to share updates with this listserv and on our website as we receive them. Once changes have been approved, the County will launch an outreach campaign to educate residents about their new USPS Place Names.

At 11:00am this morning your most important right as a U.S. and California Citizen -- the right to due process under the law -- will be violated when the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) will vote to affirm an unconstitutional $24 a month rate hike on your electric bill.

Believe it or not, the California State Assembly has introduced legislation that requires SDG&E, Southern California Edison, and Pacific Gas & Electric to collect a new ‘Fixed Fee’ on every residential electric bill in addition to your monthly electrical usage charges. This "Fixed Fee" will be billed on top of what you are already paying: the highest electric bills in the Continental USA.

Call your Commissioners, and if possible, attend the meeting (click here to attend the Webinar or listen in on your phone at (800) 857-1917).

Commissioners pay close attention to public input, and as few as half a dozen calls can send up red flags that change public policy, but you must act now by calling any one (or ideally all) of the phone numbers listed below:

How your rights are being violated

Under the Fifth and 14th Amendments of the Constitution of the United States you have the right to "due process" under the law. This right to due process is so important that it is also enshrined in ARTICLE 1 of the California Constitution with the exact same words as the U.S. Constitution.

When the founding fathers wrote the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights they vowed to defend them with their "lives," their "fortunes" and their "sacred honor."

It is time to remind our elected officials and the good men and women of the CPUC that their vows of office require them to defend the Constitutions of the United States and California.

THIS IS THE VIOLATION:

When the California Assembly oted in favor of the utility backed AB 225 (and what morphed into AB 1999), they did it under the radar and in the middle of the night WITHOUT ANY PUBLIC HEARINGS OR PUBLIC NOTICE. Under the law, public hearings and public notice are the "due process" that is required by the U.S. and Article 7 of the California Constitution.

In other words, you and your rights got screwed straight into the ground by the corporations that run and own our State Government and the CPUC (i.e. SDG&E, Southern California Edison, and Pacific Gas & Electric).

TALKING POINTS:

This is the easy part. All you have to say is that the utility-sponsored $25 fixed fee that is mandated by AB 1999 was enacted without due process. It violated your rights, and is therefore unlawful.

If nothing is done, your electric bill will be increasing. Even if you cut your electricity use to near-zero, your bill is still going up, up, up ...

Make your calls now. It could change California history, and put the Commission on notice that it is being watched.

You don't have to attend to send a powerful message!

THANK YOU........alameda county public works... (or is it SLZUSD?)
(i was told it is a grey area as the sidewalk rules are for residences) for finally repairing/replacing the sidewalk in front of Bohannon Middle School. I have watched people struggle with this sidewalk for years and so I contacted public works....over 2 years ago....

I am just glad it is getting done so it is safer for all of us,,, especially people with mobility issues that may be in wheelchairs, on scooters, walking with a cane, etc... I have watched people go out into the street or into the parking lot to avoid this treacherous stretch of sidewalk.

What's the issue?
When ZIP codes were first established in the 1960s, the United States Postal Service (USPS) assigned incorrect “City” names (or Place Names) to over 30,000 addresses in unincorporated Alameda County. This mismatch has had long-term, unintended impacts on community identity, public health data collection, and residents’ ability to find and access essential public services. In response to years of community activism, the County Board of Supervisors authorized a request to accurately register USPS Place Names to match the official names and boundaries of unincorporated Ashland, Cherryland, Hayward Acres, Fairview, San Lorenzo, and Castro Valley.
