So, many of you already know, but I received orders to do military training that took me out of the final day of floor voting in this session for the House of Representatives. A law on Washington books allows a temporary replacement to be made if a member is called into the military. It has only occurred a few times and has always been filled by the spouse of the member, but my wife just had a baby and was unable to fill in. I asked my daughter, Lily, if she would be willing and she said yes.
It should be noted that Lily doesn’t like politics and has no desire to enter that world and that is why I think her choice to serve is so powerful. She is studying to be a nurse and already has her CNA license. The bills that she voted on, she read and comprehended her reason for voting yes or no and you can’t ask more than that from a floor vote.
She turned 18 the same day she swore in which makes her the youngest to hold the office in Washington State history (verified), and perhaps in the Nation (unverified). Like George Washington, she said that “I did my duty and now I am done”. She is going back to school to finish her nursing education so she can really help people and make this world a better place to live. I am very proud of her conduct and the way she represented the people of the 19th District.
I am now back to my regular duties as State Representative so you guys are stuck with me for the foreseeable future. Also, thanks to the 6 County Commissions that approved Lily for this. I knew she wouldn’t let you down.
