Did you know that it's just as important to have a 'go kit' at home as it is to have an emergency kit in your vehicle? As we near flood and severe weather season, make sure to prepare a home emergency kit for evacuations, power outages, or sheltering in place due to bad weather!
Recommended items for a 'go kit' are:
Water, non-perishable food, battery or solar powered radio/chargers, flashlight, first aid kit, extra batteries, medications, children supplies, cash, documents, fire extinguisher, etc! Visit ready.gov/kit for more kit considerations!

With the current conditions, now is a great time to learn about Ground Blizzards. Ground blizzards develop with little or no concurrent snowfall. These occur when an Arctic cold front moves through the region, causing temperatures to drop and winds to increase quite rapidly. Strong winds will pick up the existing snow and create whiteout conditions.
REMEMBER:
-Drive Slow!
-Ensure your lights are on (headlights and taillights)
-Have an Emergency Supply Kit packed and ready in your vehicle!

If you were out this morning, you may have noticed the layer of white ice on the trees. This is caused by water droplets in fog that freeze instantly on exposed surfaces when temperatures are at or below freezing. Although pretty, when you see this you should use it as a clue to travel with caution! Freezing fog can cause black ice to form on roadways. Drive slowly, don’t use cruise control, and be aware of your surroundings!

November is recognized by the NWS as Winter Weather Preparedness month. As part of our prep on Cavalier SFS, we will discuss how to prepare for winter weather, how to stay safe during storms, generator safety and other associated content. Please reach out to Emergency Management with any questions.
Fact #1: Winter storms create a higher risk of car accidents, hypothermia, frostbite, and carbon monoxide poisoning.
Fact #2: People are most likely to suffer a heart attack during the winter season, specifically in December and January. During this time, factors such as increased holiday related stress (financial, planning and grieving), overindulgence with food and sweet treats, disrupted sleep patterns, and overexertion from shoveling/moving snow can raise your risk.

October 5-11, 2025, is National Fire Prevention Week. The 2025 theme, announced by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), is: “Charge into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home.” Lithium-ion batteries power much of our lives from smartphones, laptops, and power tools to e-cigarettes, toys, and even electric vehicles. These batteries can pose serious fire risks if mishandled.

Lithium-Ion Battery Safety Tips:
-Purchase batteries from reputable sources and ensure they are labeled by nationally recognized testing labs.
-Stop charging once battery is fully charged.
-Only use chargers compatible with your device.
-Stop using device if the battery shows damage such as an unusual odor, heat, popping sounds, swelling, or discoloration.
-Have all repairs performed by qualified professionals.
